Galeton Development Corp. Meeting

By Henry Lush
The Galeton Development Corp. Meet at 7:30AM at the Brick House Deli. There were 12 members present. B.J.Lowther Rural Health Center Coordinator of Cole Memorial Hospital, reported that the Galeton Health Center is staffed to provide patient care Monday thru Friday. Cole is conducting many interviews to locate a replacement for Dr. Callahan. In the meantime, the center is serving the community on a daily basis

The Chamber of Commerce report was made by Andrew Lychalk. He reported that the 4th of July parade was a success, perhaps the best parade in years. 21 units were marching and riding this year. The parade raffle was successful and helped to defray parade costs.

John Ziegler gave the Rotary report. Doug Reeves is the new club president taking over from Beth Hoff, Pete Folk is vice president, John is secretary, Joe Iaquinto is treasurer and Mike Callahan is the sgt at arms. The three day Woodsmen's Show will be held at Cherry Springs on August 2,3, 4. There will be more vendors and chain saw carvers this year.

Galeton Borough Council/authority report was given by Mike Plummer. Mike attends these meetings. The council approved the borough to be a Pennsylvania By Ways community under a non binding contract. He reported that there is over $100,000. outstanding in delinquent water/sewer bills. Council is stepping up action to collect same. The Wetmore Run water project is proceeding well and a major leak in town has been repaired.

County Commissioner Susan Kefover gave the county report. She requested that the August meeting be scheduled on Friday August 16 instead of Thurday the 15th at 7:30AM at the Brick House for a breakfast meeting. Carl Knoblock will be the guest speaker. He will speak about health insurance for small businesses. The Galeton Chamber will be invited to attend, The Korean War Veterans dinner will be held on Saturday, July 21 at the American Legion in Coudersport. Over 150 are expected to attend. She reported that plans are being finalized for establishing the new Family Dollar store on West St. The former Lush Brothers furniture store will be torn down to accommodate the new business. A question was raised about the lighting and lighted signs for the building. Hopefully it will not interfere with the Dark Skies. Perhaps Family Dollar should be invited to a GDC meeting.

Galeton School Report: Mike Plummer gave this report since he attends the school board meetings. The budget for the next year was approved on July 8 with a 2% tax increase. Mike suggested to the board the budget process be started in January 2014 with a clean sheet. He suggested that a citizen advisory panel be set up to assist with the budget planning. This would encourage more community involvement and interest in this very important matter.

Pa. Route Six report was given by Terri Dennison, Pa. Route Six State Chair, Terri thanked GDC for supporting the Pa. By Ways passage.

Terri is currently working on the Pa. Heritage areas which could have a positive impact on Galeton. Additional staff has ben hired for the new Pa. Route Six office on Main St. The new visitors guide and the artisans trail booklets are going to press. Work is still goin on producing the Galeton walking tours brochure. Bike paths and new sidewalks along Galeton route Six areas are being worked on. She suggested a plaque be placed on the cannon now situated on the Main St. Overlook listing the eight WWI vets who died in that war. That is the reason the cannon was acquired after the war.

The members all agreed that the newly renovated band house in the Collins Park looks outstanding thanks to GDC president Joe Pagano and John Kelley.

Wonder if Galeton can support both a Family Dollar and a Dollar General?

Dont see why there is a need to tear down such a large usable building for it. Certainly don't mind new businesses coming in, I'm all for more jobs and so on but why at the expense of something usable. Especially when they just gave away the town community building.

Tear down the metal building and make that into parking for it. and put the family dollar into the brick part.

Don't complain you have people trying to improve not destroy!!!

I wasn't trying to complain, I am all for improvements & new things in our town. Just tearing down a usable piece of history stinks. IMO of course.

That's what a lot of people thought was the plan.

Stay classy Galeton! You guys are doing it right and it seems that everyone is interested in the advancement of Galeton. Unlike Coudersport and Roulette where all the whiney crying ball babies are.

i dont belive that this town needs another store. yes jobs are needed. another store to help with the already skyrocket prices of competive store will not benefiit this towns future ! i trully belive that this store front could bebetter utilized mb as a center for teen and youth especially wiith the drug trouble in this town. mb a rehab/councel center. or mb even a bowling ally or a good resturant / game center. a pool ! there are many better options i belive that could benifit this towns future and create jobs ! i knw from speaking to people who actually live here that another store is not the right way to go ! this will only drive the few current town shoppers to go where everyone else does. any where but here ! just think that our tax dollars could be spent far more wisely.

I live here and totally agree with you 200%. We need something just like you said, youth center, tutoring center, maybe a YMCA kind of establishment, would be perfect and is needed. That size building could be used for multiple things that would benefit our town and more so our youth, troubled or not. Something of that sort would also create jobs..

Unfortunately those kinds of things are not going to happen unless the few that think they should have the funds to do so...

I too am not sure Galeton needs another dollar store. We need a doctor, a dentist, a veterinarian, a community/ youth center, a shoe store, a clothing store... well, you get the point. I love my little community and think change is good, but there are things that would help more than another dollar store (which by the way is only going to hurt the small business in town)
