Rotary District Governor Promotes Clean Water and Hearing Aid Projects

Rotary District Governor Promotes Clean Water and Hearing Aid Projects

The Coudersport and Galeton Rotary Clubs joined this past Monday to host the area’s visit by Sharon L. Benner, the newly elected Rotary District Governor. During her visit, District Governor Benner promoted clean water and hearing aids for citizens of less privileged countries.

Benner encouraged the area’s two Rotary clubs to support the clean water initiative slated for certain regions of Ecuador where the primary source of drinking water is that water captured from lead covered roof tops during the rains. The lead content of those drinking waters has resulted in alarmingly frequent occurrences of mental impairments in the children of those regions; a problem which can be addressed, in part, by placing certain filtration systems in the schools located within those communities.

District Governor Benner went on to describe how the several hearing aids being discarded throughout the United States are now being gathered and taken overseas to the citizens of less privileged countries. According to Benner, even broken hearing aids and those that have become outdated by newer technologies can be restored and otherwise put to use to help those that currently have no resources available to address their hearing impairments, especially children.

The Coudersport and Galeton Rotary Clubs are just two of the 77 Rotary Clubs that Benner will visit across the Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia regions which compose Rotary District 7360. Those interested in becoming more involved in Rotary programs, either through membership or donation are encouraged to contact Janine Morley at (814) 274-4877 (for Coudersport) or John Zeigler at (814) 435-3544 (for Galeton).
