Think About It

One Thing

Sometimes, when we’re trying to do that one thing right, we miss it. Such is the case with Mary and Martha. As the story goes, (Luke 10:41-42), Martha has filled her day with things. Rushing around to get everything done, and to make sure that everything is just right, she missed the one thing that was needed. She even got frustrated with her sister Mary for not helping. Jesus calmly pointed out to Martha that Mary had indeed got this one thing right, and that was to be quiet for a moment and to sit at his feet.

It has been said that what Mary choose was only reserved for men. Sitting at the feet of the teacher was not the place for a woman in that society. Perhaps that was where Martha was coming from. Being so accustom to playing on the role of society, she missed the essential truth that the presence of Jesus brought. Sadly we can do the same.

In Luke 4:18 Jesus said, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released,
that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free.” Do you realize that we can be held captive and be oppressed by the traditions and culture of our society? We can also be blind because of the same traditions and culture. We can so easily miss the one thing that is of the most importance because we just can’t see it. Religion does that to us also. The traditions, rituals, and doctrines of religion can keep us focused on doing things, but we can miss the one thing that is the most important. As Mary demonstrated, it was entering into the personal space of Jesus.

Sadly, we can be busy like Martha doing all of the service stuff that we feel needs to be done. We fret and stew about things, and can get very frustrated with those who don’t seem to be holding up their fair share. In all of our doing, we miss the one thing that God has said was important, a relationship with him. Perhaps, just perhaps, if we claim to be a Christian, we should look at the one thing we are doing. Is it related to service or relationship? Think about it.

Exactly. What an important message this is. ''I am the vine; you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, bear much fruit, for without me, you can do nothing.'' Abide in Him, and He shall direct your paths. What a difference there is between being Spirit led and being purpose driven.

I have a problem with that mode of thinking. Why is it we need to be led. Why must mankind be as sheep? Are we not to use our own minds choose our own paths? Why give us the ability to choose, then demand that we follow a supposed pre determined path? It doesn't make sense to me at all. I rather live a life of purpose and of my own choosing. Rather than bowing, and scraping before some needy god. Only those with a big ego or low self esteem need to be praised and worshiped. Are you worshipping because god needs it or because you need it? I think serving your fellow man is more honorable, and a better use of your time, and energy. Than worshiping some supposedly all powerful being, don't you? You people say Jesus sacrificed himself for us. You say God sacrificed his only son. I say where is the sacrifice? If Jesus knew he would return to his fathers side, and god knew he would again have his son. What did they sacrifice? I say our soldiers, cops, firemen, etc. Sacrifice daily. Spend time worshiping and praising them. For they deserve it much more. If we spent half as much time energy and money on supporting our servicemen and women. As we do on some all powerful being. Then maybe we wouldn't have soldiers needing food stamps, and all the dang cutbacks on essential services like our cops, firemen, E.M.T's, and teachers. Of course that won't happen right? Because god needs you more right? Or you need god more?

Your right I say the 10% you give to your church should be given to returning Vets, EMTs, Honest Police depts, and childhood education. I bet that would get the Tea Baggers Bitching and the Christian right just reeling. The church is the biggest scam oing in America Today!!!! Carl Rove really took the small minded Bigots in the pews of America for a ride didn't he?

Why worship the creation when I can worship the Creator?

One of the best articles so far. Stop playing Christian and be a spirit filled Christian.

Let it start with me!

Such a shame, 9:01. Your line of thinking is so empty and void.

9:01 - You make some very good points and I can understand your thinking. Based on how a lot of people who call themselves "Christians" act, it makes perfect sense. Those that like to quote Scripture to support their own agenda too often miss the part where the ONLY people that Jesus publicly called out were the self-righteous and the money-grabbers. They also spend a lot of time proving and judging themselves RIGHT and everyone else WRONG. Organized religions will always be imperfect because they are human-based. But in all that mess, there are faith-filled communities that uplift and truly do show Jesus' love to others as he asked us to. All I can tell you is that I love God and my worship and praise to Him/Her is in thanksgiving for all the blessings I have and for the love He/She showed in sending us such a profound teacher in Jesus. As far as the sacrifice goes, if you're God, what else would make you want to walk in the shoes of us mere mortals, put up with all of our crap and be brutally tortured and put to death in order help us be our better selves - except a profound love?

Please provide those scriptures.

Remember God is LOVE and if you put LOVE in place of the word God it may make more sense to you. Also remember God (LOVE) doesn't make mistakes and he (LOVE) created each and everyone of us, then he (LOVE) gave us the right to choose our own paths. Evil is hate put this where the word devil is, it too may help you see it different. Remember each of us has our own choices but we shouldn't make choices for other just ourselves.

He didn't create us we crawled out of a puddle of slime and then we evolved. Read up on science not the beliefs of primitive man.

So 9:02, how did those elements get into that puddle of slime?
Don't you have any spirituality at all?
Keep these columns coming. The author reads these comments and responds to them and seems to have a following. Remember when the one comment asked him to write about the dildine craze and he did?
9:02 can you answer the question: why are there so many educated scientists who also believe in God? I assume that with the education comes some intelligence and rationale thinking and they conclude that indeed there is something more. It's not all slime in a puddle.
