4 Year Old Rescued From Burning Bradford Apartment By Neighbor

A four year old girl was rescued from a burning apartment by a neighbor at 7 Center Street in Bradford, PA, just before 8:00 PM on Friday night.

Corporal Greg Agosti, State Police Fire Marshal, said that Susan K. Hassek, 32, of Bradford, PA, and 5 children are homeless as a result of the fire which originated on the cook top of the kitchen range in an apartment owned by the Bradford City Housing Authority. He estimated damage at $92,000.

The fire was reported by a next door neighbor. Hassek was not in the apartment at the time of the fire. Another neighbor entered the apartment after observing smoke and located the unattended 4 year old girl sleeping on a couch in the living room. The child was safely rescued and was uninjured. Trooper Agosti did not identify the neighbors.

Trooper Agosti said the investigation into the cause of the fire and an investigation into child welfare are continuing. The homeless children are boys, ages 1,3,5, and 7, and the 4 year old girl. Hassek did not have renters insurance.

Thank God for this neighbor... otherwise it could have been a very tragic ending for this four-year old..

By the way.... where was the mother? And why was this 4 yr old left unattended?

The article from the Era stated everyone else was outside the home. People should not judge based on speculation.

I'm sorry not everyone has the ERA ! So we go by what we read and what we read was the child was left by herself. I have a 4 year old daughter and there is no way in hell I would leave her by herself. Thank God for the neighbor being there. Maybe that mother shouldn't have any of her kids. PS, how is it speculating when it was written in the story ?

I don't subscribe to or purchase the Era either. The full story was on their website. It's speculation because it is ASSUMED she wasn't home or there were no adults present. Obviously, you are not going to get the entire story in 9 sentences.

Regardless if the parents were outside or not, they were either not close enough to notice the smoke or they didn't care. In either case, it's not right. They either don't care enough to provide proper supervision or they don't care about the children. It's parents like that that make me believe there should be a test in order to have children.

I hope this mother is charged. Why the hell would you leave your child(ren) alone!

How many of us have left a child sleep on the couch as we went outside to our yard to do something or to just sit on our porch? Seriously ppl just because she lives in housing and has five kids and left her child on the couch to sleep does not give you the right to judge..I sure hope nothing happens to you...

Wow! Some people these days amaze me. Definitely shouldn't be allowed to have kids! No excuse to leave a 4 yr old unattended! Poor little thing was probably cold or trying to make herself something to eat on the stove before she fell asleep.

What's with the hostility? You don't need to be a jerk. & what, you're going to wake a sleeping child to go out and clean up toys from your yard? Do you leave your child alone when you go to the bathroom? If you do, maybe you shouldn't have your child.

How about the Housing Authority enact stricter controls over their property...renters insurance, no smoking, so pets, and occupancy limits are a few to start with.

the fire started because the mother left food on the stove and there was paper on the stove that caught fire, the reason the mother didn't see the smoke was because she was down the street, she left her child on a cough sleeping with food cooking and left, luckily enough the neighbor got that child out of the place before he/she died this mother doesn't deserve to have her kids.

12:52... Have you lost your mind! I have of course gone to the bathroom with my four year old. My doors are locked, my tv off. I would never in a million years leave a child alone to go pick up toys. You leave a four year old to wake up alone? I'm sure that's not at all scary for that child to wake up alone, disoriented from sleep, to find mom gone.
If the story of leaving food on the stove cooking is true, I am just totally blown away. Have you no parental skills at all? I am so sick of reading about children suffering at the hands of incompitante parents, I could scream. This child could have died, or suffered painful burns. How dare you defend the mother. Every single move you make when your a parent, put your children first! They are here because of you, they didn't ask to be here.
Trust me, plenty of them will wish they were born into loving caring families. Unfortunately, we can't pick our mothers and fathers. I'm tired of parents having children and acting like they are a nuisance.
How about you seek some help..learn some parenting skills, scream and swear at them less, hug them more, put them first in all you do!
