Hanger: Corbett administration wasting millions on voter ID TV ads

Corbett administration wasting millions on voter ID TV ads

You’ve probably seen the “Show It” TV ads running that tell viewers that they need to show ID if they want to vote, but that they really don’t have to. Confusing? The Pennsylvania Department of State is spending $1 million to air that confusing mixed message.

The voter ID law that requires all voters to show government-issued picture IDs in order cast a ballot has been challenged in court. Implementation of the law is delayed until the courts rule on its constitutionality. The latest $1 million the Corbett administration is spending is added to the millions in legal fees being spent to defend the law in court.

The voter ID law makes it more difficult to vote. It especially makes it difficult for the elderly, people with no driver’s licenses, college students and others who do not have government-issued identification.

Voter ID laws have been enacted across the country by Republican state legislatures and governors to discourage groups of voters likely to support Democratic candidates. Pennsylvania House Majority Leader Michael Turzai admitted that the goal of passing voter ID here was to ensure that presidential candidate Mitt Romney would win the state.

Voters do not have to show ID to cast a ballot in the November election, so this $1 million in TV ads is a waste of money at a time when school districts are closing libraries. I will repeal the voter ID law, and I will support laws to make it easier, not harder to vote. Our democracy is healthier when more people participate.

Really voter ID ? Get a life dumba$$!

It's not that dumb of an Idea, you need an ID to drive, to by beer, to buy guns, to use a credit card, why note to vote (oh unless people are voting more han once under different names. Really not an incoveinance to show indentificaton.

@12:01 None of the things you stated are rights in the Constitution except arguably the right to buy guns. You can buy a gun without a ID from a private seller.

12:52 the point was to show that most individuals have an identification (besides the constitution does not say you have the right to vote without an identification). If you have a problem showing your ID maybe there is a reason you can't or shouldn't vote??

With 15 Million to 30 Million illegals(depending on source of info) in our country and areas where it has been proven that "dead" people vote and others vote more than once, Voter ID is a sensible idea long overdue.

When Attorney General Holder gave a speech to the NAACP in Washington, DC speaking out against Voter ID, ALL attendees had to show ID prior to entering the room. LOL

@1:44 that is the dumbest argument ever. Do you need an ID for the right of free speech Having to buy something in order to vote has always been found unconstitutional

You don't need a photo ID on you when driving. You just have to legally be able to drive. If you don't have an ID on you, the DMV records can be checked. When the last time you showed you ID when using a credit card. You don't actually need an ID to buy beer. You don't need an ID to consume beer It is illegal for someone under 21 to consume beer and illegal to sell to someone under 21. Sellers ask for the ID so they don't break their law.

Also if there were alot of illegals voting than the voter turnout for states with high illegal populations would be higher. The problem is that Texas, New York, California, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Arizona were all in the bottom 1/3 in voter turn out.

I never thought I'd live to see the day the American public would buy the lie that there is nothing wrong with saying "papers please"

Stop listening to "your teams" political lies and buying them up as truths you need to win a game.

What's wrong with politics today? ALL OF YOU. Get your heads out of your butts. This country used to stand for something. And "PAPERS PLEASE" AINT IT!!

Democrats don't want ID to collect welfare so why have ID to vote ! In their eyes the two go together!

Voter fraud has been studied many, many times. And in every study commissioned by every political stripe under the sun, the results have been consistent....individual voter fraud has never ever been shown to have any impact on any election ever.

If you wanted to throw an election, the best way to do it has always been from inside the election management team...stuffing of the ballot box by partisan insiders.

These voter ID laws do nothing to protect your elections but they DO place impositions to voting on the poor, the elderly and the youth who vote...and that's intentional.

It is an easy process to get an ID card from penndot. We are not an honest society. If every vote counts, then we need to verify those people voting. And an ID card, easily obtainable, is the best way to do it. Save your energy for arguing why our taxes are so high.

what pisses me off is that none of the absentee ballots of the military were counted. why? it doesn't matter if you need an i.d. or not, elections are bought and paid for. there should be a tv show named the biggest liar - cause that's the way it works. look at potter county - if the media printed what is really going on - the people would be sick!

By easily obtainable. You mean cost $13.50. That sounds like a poll tax to me

Whats funny is the person on tv saying they can't afford to get an ID while smoking a cig (at 5.00 per pack) or driving 25 miles to buy beer at 20-30 dollars a case. But can't get an DI.
