Students Zachery Brown and Kris Brumbach traveled to State College PA this past week to accept an award for a public service announcement they created in a video technology course taught by Mrs. Deborah Long last school year.

McKenzie Huggler has since gone on the college, but both Zach and Kris were able to represent their school district and Potter County at the state annual Conference on Suicide Prevention where they accepted their award.

Awards were also given for poster designs and PSA radio clips. The creativity was overwhelming and it was an honor to have students from Potter County selected for the award. Furthermore, the young men were given the opportunity to sit on a youth panel and share a youth perspective on suicide and prevention efforts that are currently taking place.

When asked about how they can help prevent suicide at their school Brown offered the suggestion to planting a seed “I try to let people know that if they want to talk I am here”. When talking about life choices and negative coping strategies that some youth turn to Brumbach said “there are ways to deal with this without doing drugs and it is important that kids know that”.

The panel was wrapped up on a final note where participants were asked to take out their cell phones and program in the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline together as a group 1-800-273-TALK.

Also attending the conference were Deborah Hamilton Coordinator of Student Assistance Program Services and Carla Milliron Student Assistance Program Liaison for Galeton School District. For more information on the Student Assistance Program contact your local school or Deborah Hamilton 814- 274-8651.
