Potter County Department of Emergency Services

• Tropical Storm Karen will make landfall along the central Gulf Coast over the weekend and weaken into a tropical depression as it moves over-land into the southeast U.S./Georgia Piedmont.

• The tropical remnants of Karen will likely merge into a frontal zone somewhere near the western Carolinas early next week. The remnants should then become absorbed into an upper level trough to yield a broad wave of low pressure, with deep tropical moisture streaming northeastward into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast states. This could lead to generous rainfall totals and a risk of flash flooding.

• Winds are not expected to be a factor with this system.

• The heaviest rain is expected to stay to the west of PA on Sunday.

• There is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms on Sunday over western PA with the primary hazard being damaging winds.

• The main threat with this system is heavy rain. At this time, 1-2" of rain is forecast in PA through next week although some locally higher amounts are possible. These amounts should be largely beneficial given recent rainfall deficits. River flooding is not expected to be a problem.
