Corbett makes a mean New Year for millions of Pennsylvanians

Corbett makes a mean New Year for millions of Pennsylvanians

Cruel, destructive policies make Pennsylvanians poorer, sicker

Harrisburg – Today, John Hanger stated his concern about the plight of Pennsylvania’s low-wage working families as 2014 dawns with no increase in the minimum wage and no Medicaid expansion.

“In 13 states, low-wage workers will wake up to a raise on January 1 when an increase in the minimum wage goes into effect,” said Hanger. “But not in Pennsylvania. In 26 states, millions of uninsured people will have health care coverage starting on January 1. But not in Tom Corbett’s cruel Pennsylvania. Tom Corbett’s policy of punishing the Commonwealth’s most vulnerable citizens will keep them poorer, sicker and cause hundreds of premature deaths.”

“Corbett opposes raising the minimum wage from its current $7.25 an hour. At that rate, a worker makes $15,080 a year – not enough to cover housing, food, medicine and transportation,” said Hanger. “Raising the minimum wage to $10.10, as I would do, would recognize the dignity of work and create a little breathing room for these families. And it would help the economy. That money would be quickly put to work buying necessities.”

“Corbett said “no” to the federal government’s offer to pay for expanding Medicaid coverage. That means 700,000 uninsured Pennsylvanians will wake up on January 1 without the security of knowing they can visit a doctor or get emergency medical care without risking financial catastrophe,” continued Hanger. “It means that starting Wednesday, Pennsylvania loses $10 million each and every day that would have gone to hospitals and other health care providers to pay for medical treatments. It means that because they don’t have health insurance, hundreds of Pennsylvanians will die because they could not access decent health care.“

“On day one of my administration,” vowed Hanger. “I will expand Medicaid in Pennsylvania.”

“Tom Corbett’s mean, destructive policies will make a miserable 2014 for millions of Pennsylvanians. The silver lining is that in November 2014, we can fire Corbett and bring in a brighter, more prosperous and more compassionate New Year in 2015,” concluded Hanger.”

John Hanger
Democratic candidate for Governor of Pennsylvania John Hanger is widely regarded as one of the most insightful and best informed progressive public policy experts in the state. Formerly a public-interest lawyer advocating on behalf of low-income families, John is nationally recognized as a leading authority on clean energy development and environmental protection. He served both Governors Casey and Rendell in key positions: first for Bob Casey as Commissioner of the Public Utilities Commission, where he successfully fought to cap electric rates to save Pennsylvania ratepayers billions and for two years as Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection in the Rendell Administration. Throughout his career in public service, John has embodied the essence of his campaign slogan "Policy first, politics second."

Oh, and he eats babies too! What a bunch of political drivel trying to be passed off as a news story. I would be embarrassed to allow it on any website I owned.

yup ...thats right ,expand medicade so the working poor have something else to pay for,,,like theres not enough coming out of a persons paycheck now.I've noticed this clown has mastered the " tell em what they want to hear" technique

I say PA needs to fix its own problems and not take more money from the government. The states need to take back control of themselves.

CORBETT IS A THUG!! I would like to see him live on minimum wage for a week. He would cry like a baby!!!

Tom Corbett is so freakin mean! I guess he wouldn't know what its like to try to survive on minimum wage. Well, with all the money the gas industry throws his way that he tucks away in off shore accounts. He could feed 1000 poor families for a year and still be a multi- millionare. John Hanger has my vote in November.

Personally, I'm darn glad that you don't own this website! That is only the truth in this article. Once again P.A. will be years behind other states that are moving forward, other states that are caring more about there citizens than corporations.

I don't understand all these people that want to give out more Medicaid to people who never worked and take away from Medicare from people who worked all their lives. I understand we need to help the poor but, just like obamacare, giving everything to people who don't work or don't want to work is making the middle class working people unable to pay their expenses or get ahead. And Hanger is just like most all others seeking elected offices, they just say what you want to hear and never follow thru. It's a sad country we live in.

Seems to me it would help the economy to increase the minimum wage a buck or two. Theses people wouldn't be saving it, they would putting it back into the economy. Also I don't see any companies hurting that pay minimum wage, Acorn, Dandy, big box stores and the like. Therefore, good luck to you out there making the minimum wage and I for one, am pulling for you.

What we need to do is make the fast food industry and companies like Walmart pay for all the benefits there employees get from the federal government

Typical democrat ! Why doesn't he talk about the 40,000 new laws and taxes that go into effect as of Jan 1 2014 put into play by the democratic party! More taxes on the middle class working people!

As a working single mother with a college education, working a minimum wage job what the hell is wrong with you people. Not everyone who is poor is that way because they're lazy, really! We live in an area where it is hard to find decent jobs and I don't care if your a liberal or a conservative there are no jobs here with decent pay and there never will be. I chose to live here for my family period. You people are so closed minded get a grip and come into the real world. Karma always catches you in the end.

The republicans enacted most of these new laws, so my friend, you may be pointing to the wrong party.

Remember the 5 cent a gal tax increase at the pump JAN 1st.

A SMALL % of Americans make minimum wage, most make above. Raising the min wage would not destroy America unlike some other people have.

6:06-If you have a college education and you are working for minimum wage I feel sorry for you. There is no reason for that. What would keep anyone in this area to raise a family?

Does anyone who says the minimum wage needs to go up realize the number of small businesses would close or cut back the workforce to make ends meet? What about with an increase of the minimum wage the price of goods would also increase meaning those people would be in the same boat. Instead of arguing about raising the minimum wage we should focus on getting more jobs and getting some of the people leaning off the government benefits. This country needs to remember "ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country". We have become to dependent on the government.

John Hanger is a pathological liar, and a sensationalist. Always has been, and always will be.

My paycheck this week was $1530 gross. I brought home $850 out of that. I claim 2 dependents. It is amazing how bad the working man gets raked over the coals these days. I can't live off what I'm making, so I have no idea how someone working for minimum wage could.

Live within your means! If you cant live on 100 dollars a day it's time to reevaluate you life style!

I am Republican, and was going to more than likely vote for Hanger coming up, but after reading this, I will write in Mickey Mouse. Corbett sucks. Raising the minimum wage MIGHT make it a little better for those that are on it, but again, those jobs aren't meant to be a career!! Many of us started at minimum wage. We worked hard to find better jobs and lived within out means, when we were at minimum wage. Raising it to 10.10 will only make the price of everything go up!It's been proven over and over. With insurance going up, gas jumping.....again, we are all paying for our governments inability to take care of itself! God help us all.

It's time many of these taxes are removed. Government needs to be downsized. School districts need get real with their budgets. School budgets need to be voted on by the people. Instead of raising taxes get rid of the fat in Government. no that won't happen but they will cut Military pensions and health care. What a joke this Country has become.

The compassionate liberals and mean conservatives. You know you are having an effect when the teachers unions & liberals are complaining. You could have a better paying job with benefits working at a power plant or gas site. Or you could lay around working at a minimum pay job and being lead around by the nose by the compassionate John Hanger. Get a better job & a sense of pride instead of complaining ! Makes me shiver to hear John Hanger is highly regarded "as one of the most insightful and best informed progressive policy experts."
