Major NY Roads Reopened After Flooding
Flooding wreaks havoc in Steuben, Chemung, Schuyler
Posted Aug. 9, 2013 @ 3:45 pm
Corning Leader
Heavy rainstorms that fell overnight Thursday and late this morning caused flooding that temporarily closed State Route 414 and State Route 14, sent a swift water rescue team into a campground, evacuated a trailer park and swamped homes, among other issues.
Flooding in the Post Creek area left standing water and debris on Route 414 – one of the main roads to Watkins Glen International on NASCAR weekend – and forced the road to be closed temporarily by the state Department of Transportation.
It was closed in the early morning hours Friday, reopened, and then shut down again after another late-morning downpour.
The DOT had to inspect a bridge on Route 414 near Buck Hollow Road because there were fears it had been undermined by flooding, but it was deemed safe.
Route 414 was reopened by late Friday afternoon.

Classes at Cameron County Artisan Center Rewarding
Classes at Cameron County Artisan Center Rewarding
Cameron County Fair entries in the arts and crafts category included many items created at classes offered at the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce & Artisan Center. Baskets, silk scarves and mesh ribbon wreaths garnered prize ribbons at the recent fair. “This is so exciting!” gushed executive director Tina Johns Solak. “To see that people took classes and then felt comfortable to enter the fair and help increase the fair entries is a goal accomplished.” Other entries came from those that knit and crochet on Tuesday nights at the chamber. Several of those pieces also were awarded ribbons.
An opportunity to learn a new art form is coming up Thursday or Friday at the chamber office. Artist Mary Wise will teach Zentangle which is a form of doodling where shapes are filled in with designs. Students of any age will make a note card for the price of $5.00. The class is offered Thursday night 6-8:30pm or Friday morning 10am-noon. To register call the chamber office at 814-486-4314.

Chancellor Hatch Appointed Examiner for 2013 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award
Chancellor Hatch Appointed Examiner for
2013 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award
DuBOIS - Melanie Hatch, chancellor and chief academic officer at Penn State DuBois, has been appointed by Dr. Patrick Gallagher, Director of the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), to the 2013 Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. The Award, created by public law in 1987, is the highest level of national recognition for performance excellence that a U.S. organization can receive.
As an examiner, Hatch is responsible for reviewing and evaluating applications submitted for the Baldrige Award. The board is composed of approximately 500 leading experts selected from industry, professional and trade organizations, education and health care organizations, and nonprofits, including government. Hatch has extensive experience in both education and business. Before coming to Penn State DuBois she was the founding dean of the College of Engineering and Business at Gannon University in Erie, PA. There, she oversaw six academic departments and a small-business development center. She led strategic planning and positioning initiatives for the college, and focused on building partnerships with local leaders in business and industry. She has also previously served as dean of the College of Business at the Indiana Institute of Technology in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and was an associate dean of the School of Business at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia.
Those selected meet the highest standards of qualification and peer recognition. All members of the board must take part in a preparation course based on the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence and the scoring and evaluation processes for the Baldrige Award.
The Baldrige Award may be given annually in each of six categories: manufacturing, service, small business, education, health care, and nonprofit. Awards have been presented to 93 organizations, including the 2012 recipients: Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, Grand Prairie, Texas (manufacturing); MESA Products Inc., Tulsa, Okla. (small business); North Mississippi Health Services, Tupelo, Miss. (health care); and City of Irving, Irving, Texas (nonprofit). Information about the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program and the application process is available by calling (301) 975-2036, sending an e-mail to baldrige@nist.gov, or going to the Baldrige Program's Web site at http://www.nist.gov/baldrige.
The award program is managed by the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program, part of NIST, in close cooperation with the private sector. ASQ assists the program, under contract, with logistics of the application review process, preparation of award documents, and other activities.
For further information about Melanie Hatch, contact the Penn State DuBois Office of Public Information at 814-375-4776. For media inquiries or interview requests about the Baldrige Program or the Baldrige Award, reporters may contact Michael E. Newman, NIST Public Affairs Office, (301) 975-3025, michael.newman@nist.gov.

Update for Northern Route 255 Project in Saint Marys, Week of Aug. 12
Update for Northern Route 255 Project in Saint Marys, Week of Aug. 12
Saint Marys – Work to improve a northern section of Route 255 in the city of Saint Marys is continuing. The project stretches from the Tractor Supply Co. intersection to Route 120/State Street in Saint Marys. Work this year will concentrate on the section between Wendy’s and Satterlee & Sons.
Once the project completes in late summer 2014, travel along this section of Route 255 will be smoother and more efficient. PennDOT will issue regular updates on this project.
Activity the week of Aug. 12 will include:
• The contractor will be working 24 hours a day starting Sunday at 8 p.m. and continuing through Thursday.
• The current traffic pattern between the intersection with Tractor Supply Co. and extending to the intersection at Iron Run Road will be in place until further notice. This pattern restricts traffic to one lane northbound and one lane southbound with a center turning lane. Motorists are reminded that the center turn lane is for turning movements only.
• The contractor will continue to excavate and remove the old northbound lanes of Route 255 between the intersection at Tractor Supply Co. and Iron Run Road. This work will be performed at night.
• The contractor will be installing new storm drainage within the work zone. This work will be performed during daytime and nighttime hours.
• The contractor will be grading and placing stone on the new roadway base. This work will be performed at night.
• Access to businesses within the work zone will be maintained during normal business hours.
All work is weather and schedule dependent. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving and stopped vehicles through the entire work zone. Motorists are advised to be cautious when traveling through the work zone and should obey the posted speed limit.
Overall work includes pavement repair, drainage improvements, addition of a right-turn lane for Route 255 northbound traffic at Vine Street, re-alignment of the Arch Street intersection, a right turn lane on Route 120 east for traffic heading south on Route 255, and other construction items. Dave Gutelius Excavating Inc. of Mifflinburg is the contractor on this $12.8 million project.
About a one-mile section of roadway separates this project from PennDOT’s other Route 255 project that stretches from north of Greenbriar Drive to just south of the Kersey/Route 948 intersection.

Update for Route 255 Betterment Work near I-80/DuBois, Week of Aug. 12
Update for Route 255 Betterment Work near I-80/DuBois, Week of Aug. 12
Work to improve Route 255 near the I-80 DuBois/101 interchange is continuing. When work completes in mid-October, a smoother roadway surface and new traffic signals at the I-80 ramps will provide area drivers with more efficient travel and improved traffic flow.
Work the week of Aug. 12 will feature the following activity:
• On Monday and Tuesday, motorists should expect lengthy delays as the contractor will be performing widening work between Treasure Lake and the Fairfield Inn on the southbound side of the route. Flaggers will be in place through the work area.
• The contractor will complete drainage work in the southbound lanes. Delays are possible as this work is carried out.
Motorists should expect to encounter flaggers throughout the entire work zone and significant travel delays. Drivers should give themselves extra time to travel through the area. PennDOT reminds drivers to remain alert and proceed through the work zone with caution. Normal work hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. each weekday.
Overall work on Route 255 will include milling and paving, bridge deck repair, cleaning and upgrading of pipe culverts and inlets, water-line extension, and installation of new traffic signals at the I-80 ramps.
All work is weather and schedule dependent. Work is scheduled to end by mid-October of this year. New Enterprise Stone and Lime Inc. is the contractor on this $3.4 million project.

Think About It
Outward Conformity
Jesus stated “What comes out of a man is what makes him unclean”, Mark 7:20. Yet the Jews of that day had numerous laws and practices that were practiced to make themselves clean. They often prided themselves on their performance on this outward conformity to their rules, laws and regulations. The problem, as Jesus so rightly pointed out, you can make something look good on the outside, but that doesn’t make things different on the inside.
We can bring a lot of pressure upon people to change their outward behavior. Through laws and consequences, we attempt to influence societal change and then wonder why things aren’t getting better. People express remorse for behavior and promise to change, but never do. The problem is that that outward change can never be sustained without an inward transformation.
The religion of Jesus day is no different that what we have today. We somehow equate the idea that if I do all of the right things, outward conformity, that somehow I will be okay. Some even believe that if they do enough good outwardly that what they are inwardly will somehow be canceled. It goes along with the idea that God grades with a set of scales. If your good out weighs the bad then you’re acceptable to him. But that’s not what the Scriptures teach. Actually, Jesus taught a simple truth, it’s called being born again. That’s what he told Nicodemus in John 3. Nicodemus, a teacher of the law, understood on some level that what he was doing wasn’t meeting the mark. Jesus quickly pointed out that it was about an inward change, not an outward conformity that made us acceptable.
Sadly, many go through life holding on to hurts, resentments, unforgiveness, and bitterness. Try as they might, who and what they are will never change until they address those inner issues. One cannot change when they are holding on to something else. We tend to hold on to what’s familiar; change becomes almost an impossible task because we’re clinging so hard to what we already know. Real freedom comes when we let go. Think about it.

You Asked for it Now Come and Get It
You Asked for it Now Come and Get It
For years residents in Emporium have stopped in the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce office and reminisced about the shopping that once filled Fourth Street. This week the chamber launches a new campaign calling Emporium the land of endless gifts!
“Within one block there are eight retail stores featuring gifts. If you can’t find a gift in one of those stores, then you should consider a gift certificate,” says Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tina Johns Solak.
Two stores have opened this month, Wheaton Gun Supply carries hunting licenses, guns, ammunition and fishing supplies plus outdoor clothing. The other new store is Sweet Scentsations featuring home decorating items, but also chocolates, and infant clothing.
They join established stores like Reids Hometown Emporium which is a RadioShack dealer and offers electronic toys and gadgets. Cappy’s Clothes carries Red Raider Football fan gear and handmade dish cloths among wool socks, scarves, plus men and womens clothing. Emporium Pharmacy is your headquarters for Melissa and Doug wooden toys, picture frames, unique holiday decorations and at Christmas features an entire room devoted to Christmas items. The next store is Flowers N Things. The name says it all, not only can you purchase fresh, silk, or dried flower arrangements, but stuffed animals, wall art and cards are also sold. Copy Katz has food items from Potter County including maple syrup and mustard plus offer one of a kind imprinting on mugs, and shirts. The chamber office is filled with unique artwork including jewelry, photographs, purses, and pottery.
“This is quite a collection of stores and Emporium is very fortunate to have new stores opening their doors, when so many nearby towns are saying goodbye to local merchants,” Johns Solak continues. “The price of parking is among the lowest in the region and Emporium Borough Council usually approves free parking for the holiday shopping season starting in November through the end of December.” Parking is available in front of the stores and the cost is one dime for one hour of parking.
The merchants intend to use the slogan: Emporium The Land of Endless Shopping through the busy holiday gift giving season.
