Hanger Lauds Criminal Case In XTO Pollution

Hanger Lauds Criminal Case In XTO Pollution
Criminal Charges Arose Due To Hanger’s Strengthening DEP Inspections

John Hanger, the Democratic candidate for Governor, today issued the following statement in support of the criminal case against XTO Energy, a subsidiary of ExxonMobil in Pennsylvania, for wastewater discharges that polluted a Lycoming County waterway.

Statement by John Hanger:
I am glad that a Pennsylvania judge sent to trial criminal charges filed by Attorney General Kane against XTO for discharging drilling wastewater pollution into the environment. The charges are serious and should be resolved by a fair trial.

This case began, when an inspector of the Department of Environmental Protection found in November 2010 XTO holding tanks with valves open and drilling wastewater pouring out of them. The increased pace of inspections was made possible, because I increased the DEP staff regulating the gas industry from 88 to 210 employees and ordered them to enforce the state's environmental regulations.

When I was Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department, I asked DEP staff to refer the XTO case to the Attorney General's Office for its review to determine whether criminal charges were warranted. During my tenure, I made it a point to refer cases that warranted criminal investigation to the Attorney General.

I thank Attorney General Kane for her review of the XTO matter and the actions that she has taken.

Democratic candidate for Governor of Pennsylvania John Hanger is widely regarded as one of the most thoughtful and best informed progressive public policy experts in the state. Formerly a public-interest lawyer advocating on behalf of poor families, John is nationally recognized as a leading authority on clean energy development and environmental protection. He served both Governors Casey and Rendell in key positions: first for Bob Casey as Commissioner of the Public Utilities Commission, where he successfully fought to cap electric rates to save Pennsylvania ratepayers millions; and for two years as Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection in the Rendell Administration. Throughout his career in public service, John has embodied the essence of his campaign slogan "Policy first, politics second."

So which is it Hanger?? You claim the DEP is incompetent when it is fitting but apparently they seem to be inspecting natural gas facilities just fine. If you read this article, he himself is the reason this violation was identified and enforced.

And the greedy so and so's should be loosing votes. He's got my vote. Stick to your guns, Mr Hanger ! Get those polluters to pay for the clean up of their illegal activities. Now lets stop them from ever doing it again by putting them out of business.
