Northwest PA Conventional Oil Producers Rebuff Proposed New Regs

Proposed regs hit by local drillers
DEP told livelihoods jeopardized

By BEN KLEIN (bklein@timesobserver.com) ,
The Times Observer

Conventional oil producers from northwestern Pennsylvania made one thing clear to state Department of Environmental Protection officials Wednesday evening at the Warren County Courthouse: Go back to the drawing board.

It was the last of nine public meetings held across the state to solicit comment on proposed oil and gas surface activity regulations.

Multi-generational shallow well producers and ancillary businesses from Warren County and the surrounding area testified the proposed regulations are suited for large multinational corporations drilling for natural gas in the Marcellus shale, not for conventional well producers who have been operating in the Pennsylvania oil patch for over 150 years. How about you local drillers go back through the forest and pick up every last piece of junk and nasty oil mess you have left behind over 150 years then talk to us about how you are so different. Maybe you could pick up some respect for the landowner along the way. You need more regulation because you continue to fly under the radar without consequence.

The main purpose of the DEP is to shut down anything they can with regulations! They really don't care if jobs are lost !

AGREE 100% with the , first comment. There are COUNTLESS old(unsealed), leaky gas well all over our lands. Why, should these few, unethical people be allowed to RUIN Pennsylvania for all of us? Pennsylvania's being turned into a toxic wasteland. A handful benefit(monetarily)while the masses(people, wildlife)suffer by wallowing in this chemical dump, which used to be so beautiful.

12:58....A toxic wasteland?? Wow, from which area of PA or OH or WV or any where is the US are you speaking of? I would like to see that, where do I go? A finished well has a few pieces of pipe sticking out of the ground, is that toxic? The only thing shallow wells have are a metal pumping jack, is that toxic? This area has been pumping oil for 150+ years. Yes, there have been a few spills or incidents but a toxic wasteland! Possibly you should go back to Philly or wherever you hail from and hug the trees down there!
The only toxicity around here is from your vastly UNINFORMED description of oil production. Stop and visit a local producer and let them show you how they produce oil and gas and all of the protections they take. Oh and to the article's point: NO, all oil and gas wells are not created equal so one set of regs should not be all inclusive!
