Policeman saves Olean woman from burning home

OLEAN — No injuries were reported from a fire at a north Olean residence early Wednesday morning.

At 3:35 a.m., city firefighters were dispatched to 431 N. Ninth St., a two-story home near Wayne Street. City property records list Mary D. Smith, 83, as the owner and occupant of the property.

Ms. Smith’s safe escape from her home is credited to the quick action of Patrolman Brian Cross, a 15-year veteran of the police department.

Patrolman Cross “was out on patrol and smelled smoke,” said police Chief Terry Schnell. “He drove around the area and found the house on fire.”

After radioing dispatch, Patrolman Cross entered the burning home and located Ms. Smith. He then assisted her in escaping the blaze unscathed.  Read more .....
