Think About It

Going The Distance

Life is about a journey not an event, yet many move through life from one event to another. Although it is true that there are many events in life, when we focus on only these things we miss the real joy and value of life itself.

There are many tragic events that can happen in a person’s life. Abuse, neglect, loss, heartache and host of other things can take its toll. But interestingly, what happens in one life is not unlike the life of others. There is not some cosmic entity that's out to get us. You haven't been singled out to suffer or to have bad things happen. It's not personal and the quicker that we can get past that, the quicker we can get on track to go the distance.

Going the distance is about setting your hands to the plow and not looking back. It's about fixing your eyes upon the finish line and going for it. Some have even described life, as much like a race, and like any race, there are obstacles. These obstacles can be physical, mental or emotional. They can be separate or all three combined. Having run a few marathons I can certainly tell you that all three of those things happen to most runners. The first marathon that I ran was in New York City and I had my eyes on the finish line from beginning to end. Why? Well most important, my ride home was there, and if I didn't get to the finish line I wasn't sure how I was going to get home. Going the distance was about finishing, maybe not as well as some, but not as bad as others. The point was, I finished and my ride was there to greet me.

If you're going to go the distance you have to get your eyes off the stuff that's dragging you down in the moment. Is that always easy? No, sometimes it's a real battle. But like the runner the race is finished one step at a time. So too is it with the events that you're facing right now. Keep you eyes on the finish line and go the distance. You'll be glad you did. Think about it.
