Trail Town Study Results

Trail Town Study Results

One year ago more than a dozen residents of Cameron County met at the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce office and discussed the future of Emporium, Driftwood, Sterling Run and Sinnemahoning. Cathy McCollom a well known trail town developer led the group on a tour of Emporium discussing amenities sought by trail users.

McCollom will be back in Emporium Wednesday night to present her findings and suggestions for the populated areas of the county. The meeting is open to the public and will start at 7pm at the chamber office at 34 East Fourth Street. Executive Director Tina Johns Solak encourages business owners, residents and municipal officials to attend the meeting.

A Greenways Plan developed by North Central Regional Planning and Development identified Driftwood and Sinnemahoning as trail hubs and Emporium as a trail town. The funding for the trail town study was provided by a DCNR grant administered by North Central Regional and Planning.

“The planned work on the West Creek Rails to Trails has the potential to bring hundreds of visitors to Emporium“, says Johns Solak. “Having a study focusing on trail amenities will be a helpful tool to our existing businesses. Owners may find ways to expand and of course the document and planning will help recruit new businesses.”

What future in Emporium/Cameron County? Highest unemployment in the state. Largest declining population in the state. A DCNR that does nothing for recreation.
A sub standard school system with too many teachers, few students and outrageous taxes. An ambulance service without a paramedic. The only resident practicing physician being forced out by incompetent management. A town that can't even get a gravel bar removed from the stream. Welcome to Emporium, the new Austin in the Wilds. Sorry about that, Austin.

In response to 6:38. I have many of the same concerns as you about Emporium and Cameron County. This problem didn't start with our current leaders. This is a problem that spans many decades of elected leaders sitting on their hands and doing nothing. This problem would have been much easier to address had it been done in small increments over the years. Lets start with the school system. The district knew in the 90's before they built the addition on the little school about population falling off. They still went ahead and built. Thats one of the problems with some of our current leaders. They ignore the facts and go ahead and spent the money anyway. Look at the house the board bought next to the high school. They say we needed that for another exit from the property. The current exits were fine for the last 60 years. The enrollment was much higher then now! Whats next? DCNR. This subject makes me very angry. There are no ATV trails for the residents of this county to ride to speak of! These forest belong to the people. I don't understand why one woman can controll this decision not to let ATV's to ride in the forests. The only thing I can think of is just plain ego!!! You can ride in Susquehannanock state forest for ever on the miles of trails. Come on queen District Manager! With that being said,I urge everyone who lives in the 25th PA Senatorial district and in the 67th PA House Congressional district to write Marty Causer and Joe Scarnati in response to the property tax rate increase on state forest land. Marty has a bill to increase the amounnt of money the state pays in property tax to the counties. Joe had gotten the rate increase about 9 or ten years ago in the same manner. Best of luck Gentlmen on the bill.

You don't have to be sorry Austin has become such a sad run down place because of very poor and border line criminal management with in the town council and school board. Borrowing millions of dollars for the school and town when they have no idea other than raising taxes to pay it back ! They waste more money in a year than alot of people live on ! And don't even get me going on the under the table behind closed doors deals that are made!
