Citizens & Northern Bank warns of IRS Scams

It is not uncommon to see scams perpetrated in the name of federal or state agencies. IRS related scams usually increase around tax time.

However, this year it is especially bad.

The US Treasury is getting 600-700 calls a day from people who have gotten calls from telemarketers impersonating IRS agents. The callers tell the customers that they will be confiscating their bank assets and they quote tax regulations to confuse the victim.

They want the victim to purchase and send Green Dot reloadable cards or other items of value.

The callers are relentless and cruel. Please spread the word.

They are targeting the elderly and trying to scare them into thinking that they are in trouble with the IRS. If someone owes the IRS money, they will receive a letter in the mail, not an email or phone call.

If you receive a pop up message offering you a free FICO score and it looks like it's coming from C&N, DO NOT click on it!

This is Malware and is not coming from Citizens & Northern Bank.

In instances where customers have clicked on the link, small withdrawals of $1 or less have appeared on their accounts.

Scammers start with these small amounts, then withdraw larger sums. Please monitor your accounts regularly. The best way to do this is via Internet Banking. If you think you may be a victim, contact us at once, toll-free, at 1-877-838-2517.
