Regional Agency To Offer Free Internet-Based Education

Regional Agency To Offer Free Internet-Based Education

education_just_ahead_resizedFree training on computer technology, business management, graphic design and other skills will soon be available to area residents 24/7 through a government partnership.

Details were shared with the public at a recent meeting of the Potter County Board of Commissioners.

Between May and December, the Online Broadband and Technology Training website will offer interactive training along with technical assistance around the clock. Those successfully completing each course will receive a certificate that can be used to document proficiency to prospective employers.

Sheila Singer, representing the sponsoring organization, Northcentral Pa. Regional Planning and Development Commission, said there are more 100 courses available, ranging from popular computer software training such as Excel and Microsoft Word, to project management, business marketing, and effective use of social media. Singer said the key to a successful roll-out is an effective support service. Northcentral has contracted with a provider who can be contacted by phone, email or internet-based chat.

Meanwhile, the agency is tweaking the website to make it as customer-friendly as possible. She is working with Chambers of Commerce, Pennsylvania CareerLink and other organizations to spread awareness. “With such a short time window for offering these courses, we need all the help we can get to spread the word,” Singer told the commissioners.

Funding comes from the federal government’s economic stimulus legislation, the American Recovery Act, as well as the Pa. Dept. of Community and Economic Development.

I am very pleased to see something like this, coming on the heels of the movement to bring college classes to our area and the discussions of investing in early childhood education. It would be nice to see some comments on this site when people are doing things to make this a better place to live. I hope this is a great success.

Yes, I am also pleased. Now I can do a spreadsheet of my welfare and food stamp receivables and my bath salt payables. Funding from
our Socialist government at its best.
