Smethport Woman Stopped By Person Using Red & Blue Emergency Lights

Police Impersonator Stops Smethport Woman

Numerous Facebook posts this week, warning of a person who has stopped at least one woman's vehicle by using red and blue strobe lights on their vehicle, have been confirmed by State Police at the Kane Station.

Trooper Dylan J. Toy said an incident occurred along the northbound berm of SR 46 in the Betula area of Norwich Township, McKean County last Saturday just after midnight.

An unknown actor activated blue and red strobe lights within their vehicle and the victim, an 18 year old Smethport woman, stopped along the Northbound lane of Rt. 46, thinking it was a police officer.  The actor exited the vehicle and approached the victim's vehicle, walked around it, and returned to the actor's vehicle.

The actor was reported to be wearing a ski mask at the time and was tall and slender. The actor's vehicle was described as a light colored 4 door sedan with the strobe lights on the dash of the vehicle.

Anyone with related information on this incident is asked to contact Pennsylvania State Police at the Kane Station or call 814-778-5555.

This is terrible. All I can say to any women is do not pull over until you are in a well lighted area. Any decent officer would respect that if you tell them why you did not stop right away. Be careful. Hope they get the person before they hurt someone.

Holy Crap. That is scary. Thanks for posting!

Didn't a story in the Bradford era this morning say this is all false?

I've instructed my wife that if some guy in a ski mask approaches her vehicle...to introduce him to the business end of her .45!

yeah well apparently the bradford era is wrong

Glad I have a permit to carry

on the other hand if you refuse to stop right away for fear of a perv you risk being shot for resisting a police stop

Imagine that.... the Bradford Era being wrong. :-)

@10:29-In the safety for female travelers courses that I took at work, the police advised us that if we are being pulled over in an area that we didn't feel was safe that we should put on our 4 way flashers and drive slowly to a well lit area with other people around. No cop is going to shoot you for resisting a traffic stop if you do that.

Just call 911 and let them know if yr being pulled over. they can help verify. if yr not in cell range just drive to the nearest police station.

The Bradford ERA posted this because at the time there were no reports of this to the PSP. that is my theory anyhow.

@11:07...that may sound like a good idea, but in this area, that well lit area could be a very long ways away and the police officer might not have much patience after a few miles of that. The only REAL solution for this i for police to eliminate the use of unmarked cars...then you wouldn't have the imprsonator to begin with.

Lock your doors and dial 911 ask dispatcher to verify if its the real deal

This will end up having a trooper shot and killed or seriously injured. Whoever is doing this needs the highest level of punishment allowable. People put trust in law enforcement. This young lady is very lucky she was not seriously injured, abducted or worse.

This is sad but amusing at the same time. Since this has been going on for a minimum of 8 years and State Rep Causer sent a notice out years ago not to pull over unless you feel safe if that means driving to a twenty four hour store do so. They can't shoot you for resisting. Unless given cause. Don't speed and drive cautiously to the place you are comfortable. And you should never pull over for an unmarked car

Sounds like a psychopath ex got the wrong car, or possibly a bad prank someone was doing because they were bored. Be thankful the girl wasn't hurt, other than being being scared. Also, before anyone starts bashing about the bad prank, I was in dollar store parking lot, in emporium, with 3 kids under 10 years old when a van flew down the road with their lights off and went right behind the store, I never saw my 2 kids and their friend so scared, just because the preachers son and his friend were bored.

10:29 you might want to lay off the tv crime dramas...citations for "failure to stop" and/or "fleeing and eluding" would undoubtedly be issued but, seriously, would they shoot you for finding a safe place to stop? I don't think so Scooter....and no, before you ASSUME, I'm not a cop or a cop's husband or wife... but, I am a big fan of common sense.

No cop will shoot anyone for driving to a well lit area. Now, if you took off speeding like an idiot, well that is your own fault. As for the Era being wrong, I would call the police station today and tell them the same thing happened, and could still be a lie/wrong. If someone was that scared and or frightened, I would have called the police asap, not days after I put it on facebook. I am a woman, and I am not scrared. Nor do I beleive this. And IF something like this happened to me, they would be picking their self off the ground from my car bumper, or somone would be scrapping them off the ground.

I was also advised by a state trooper friend to put on my 4 way flashers, and proceed very slowly to a well lit area If I am ever alone or do not feel safe and am being pulled over. Thankfully, I never have been pulled over, but would not hesitate to follow his advice.

PA LAW DICTATES THAT YOU ARE ALOUD TO PUT YOUR EMERGENCY 4WAY SIGNALS ON AND DRIVE TO A WELL LIT AND/OR POPULATED AREA, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO STOP RIGHT THERE AND THEN JUST DO NOT BE IGNORANT ABOUT IT

Just to clarify, I am the mother of the 18 year old and we did not post the incident on facebook. We did, however, call our local police department(who informed us it was out of their jurisdiction) and then called the State Police. A trooper came to our house and took a full report of the incident. All of this took place well before the "hoax" article in the Era, the post on this site and the comments on facebook. In all honesty, my only wish is that everyone be aware that someone is impersonating an officer so that this doesn't happen to someone else with maybe entirely different results.

I know this must be true because there is NEVER a cop on route 46!

Anonymous said...

To the parent of the 18 year old, Im glad your child is safe! I hope this person who did this is caught so that nothing more serious happens.

Anonymous said...

this why cops should not be allowed to pull people over in undercover cars!

I love all these comments telling people not to pull over for the police... just drive slowly to a well-lit area they say... yea right, let me know how that works out for you... let me know how that's working out for Robert Leone.
