NY State Police in Troop A begin "Operation Hang Up" to stop distracted driving

State Police in Troop A begin "Operation Hang Up" to stop distracted driving

April 10, 2014 - April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month and traffic crashes continue to be the greatest threat to the safety of the average New Yorker and the number one killer of teens in America.  Cell phone use and texting are responsible for a significant proportion of traffic crashes, injuries, and deaths. These behaviors continue to become increasingly common despite their obvious danger.

State and local law enforcement are participating in stepped up traffic safety enforcement efforts including “Operation Hang Up” announced by Governor Cuomo yesterday. “Operation Hang Up” will consist of high visibility, stepped up cell phone and texting enforcement statewide April 10 – April 15.

“The NY State Police has always been in the forefront of trying to keep our highways safe for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. Operation Hang Up is a campaign about protecting everyone using our roads and highways from preventable injuries and property damage caused by distracted drivers using cell phone and other electronic devices,” said Major Michael Cerretto, Troop A Commander.

The dates for this year’s spring "Operation Hang-Up Campaign" correspond with a coordinated nationwide effort to combat distracted driving through ad campaigns and enforcement. In response, Troop A will partner up with other law enforcement agencies and will make distracted driving enforcement a priority.

Operation Hang-Up will run from Thursday, April 10, through Tuesday, April 15, 2014.

WHY NOT EVERYDAY ? A TRAFFIC STOP FOR THIS VIOLATION MAY SAVE A LIFE. I SEE AT LEAST 10 PERSONS A DAY WHEN DRIVING EITHER TEXTING OR ON CELL PHONES BUT NO LAW ENFORCENENT. WHY????????????

Does this include the Troopers and the like;because every time I see one of them they have the phone glued to there ear.

The cops word that they were using a cell phone isn't enough. The judges want proof like phone records of the usage - date- time. Who wants to go through all that.

I think police have a little better training on driving and talking on cells. You never hear of them crashing while texting. Just saying.

11:24 Are they ABOVE the law????

oh my goodness... Police; Local or State are allowed to use cell phones while in their cars.

Look up the reasons and then find a hang nail to pick...geez!!!

If people would use common sense, show compassion for their fellow men and women. A few ruin it for all. All we had years ago were ten laws. But now look how many we have.

First off, is Troop A actually in PA ? Or is it a New York State Troop, it isn't specified... Second off, the police are NOT trained in driving any more than the average EXPERIENCED drivers, just look at THEIR driver/accident records. And third off, Just where does the law EXEMPT the police from using their cell phones? They have radios, satelites, etc in their vehicles ... They are not and should not be exempt from the same laws we are required to follow.

A. It clearly says New York
B. local and state police are trained in the academy regarding driving safety, defensive driving, pit maneuvers, ect. This is well beyond what "experienced" drivers face.
C. All emergency personnel are exempt from cell phone restrictions while in their vehicle.
D. They not only have radios but computers as well....
E. don't like them being exempt, call your congressman.
F. Pick the dang hang nail and find a hobby.
