Caroline Cawley, 96, Eldred, PA, passed away on Thursday (May 1, 2014) in Ashtabula, Ohio.

Born Oct. 24, 1917, in Conneaut, Ohio, she was the daughter of Anthony and Antonia Maleckar Kaluza. On Nov. 23, 1942, in Eldred, she married James Christopher Cawley, who later became postmaster of Eldred’s U.S. Post Office and who predeceased her on June 5, 1990.

Her three older siblings, Antonia, Anthony and Joseph, also predeceased her. Caroline was a 1940 graduate of Westbrook Academy in Olean, N.Y. While her husband served in the U.S. Army during World War II, she moved to Washington, D.C., and worked for the War and Agriculture Departments.

After the war, to help raise her three children, she began work as a legal secretary in 1955, retiring in 1993.

Caroline was a member of the St. Raphael Church and also a member of the Altar Rosary Society.

Surviving are her three children, James H. (Mary Kevin) Cawley of Mechanicsburg, Barbara (Richard) Close of Mount Gretna and Caroline “Becky” (Roger) Beno of Ashtabula; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Caroline will be remembered for her warm personality, her devotion to her faith and her love of her family and friends. She will be sadly missed by all those whose lives she touched.

Her family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Frame Funeral Home in Eldred. The rosary will be recited at the funeral home at 7:45 p.m. on Sunday. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at
10 a.m. Monday (May 5, 2014) at St. Raphael’s Church in Eldred, with Fr. Vince Cieslewicz as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery in Allegany, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Altar Rosary Society of St. Raphael’s Church, Eldred, PA 16731; or to the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, NY 14706.
