DEP, DCNR Announce Bicycle Friendly Business Designation

DEP, DCNR Announce Bicycle Friendly Business Designation

Harrisburg – Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Secretary E. Christopher Abruzzo announced today that the Rachel Carson State Office Building has been rated a “silver bicycle friendly business” by the League of American Bicyclists.

The Rachel Carson building is home to both DEP and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ (DNCR) central offices. It is located at 400 Market St., Harrisburg.

“I am pleased to announce on behalf of both DEP and DCNR that our shared building, the Rachel Carson State Office Building, has been named as a Silver-level Bicycle Friendly Business by the League of American Bicyclists,” Abruzzo said.

“I hope that this designation will encourage other state agencies and local businesses to pursue becoming bicycle-friendly businesses that understand the importance and impact biking to work can have on both the environment and health of employees.”

According to the League of American Bicyclists, to attain a silver designation, the organization must have the infrastructure to support biking to work, as well as an active network of bikers within the organization. There are a total of five possible designations: honorable mention, bronze, silver, gold and platinum.

“It’s important for the department to set a good example by making our own practices bicycle-friendly,” DCNR Secretary Ellen Ferretti said. “This designation demonstrates DCNR’s commitment to improving bicycle infrastructure across the state.”

The League of American Bicyclists is a national advocacy group that aims to create a “bicycle friendly America” through education, legislation and engaging local communities.
