Forest Management/Habitat Tour

Forest Management/Habitat Tour

Habitat Tour 2010
On Sunday May 4th, 2014 the Susquehannock State Forest will be hosting its annual forest management/habitat tour. The Susquehannock State Forest is located almost entirely in Potter County and consists of approximately 265,000 acres. Representatives from DCNR (Bureau of Forestry), Natural Resource Conservation Service, United States Forest Service, Black Forest Conservation Association, North Central Forest Landowners Association and the Pennsylvania Game Commission will be participating in this year’s tour.

Several different site visits are planned for the tour. The first stop will be at an actively managed private land tract in the Roulette area. We will be looking at the work the landowners have been doing and discussing how the Bureau of Forestry, Pennsylvania Game Commission and Natural Resource Conservation Service can help landowners in meeting their management goals. The second site visit will be at a 2,000 acre section of state forest land being intensively managed for woodcock and grouse. Here we will be looking at the habitat work that has been done and discussing woodcock and grouse habitat requirements and their population trends. The third stop will consist of an overview of the Susquehannock State Forest timber management program, a history of forest management in Potter County and an overview of the timbersale process. At this stop we will also discuss the importance of diversifying forest age-classes and its impact on wildlife species. We will also touch on the local current forest insect and disease status and Susquehannock State Forest wildlife management. We will return to the Black Forest Conservation Association at the conclusion of the tour for lunch and a brief tour of the club grounds.

The goal of the tour is to exchange information, build a better relationship with those that use the state forest, observe and discuss some of the challenges involved in both sustainable forest and wildlife management and examine some of the forest habitat improvements that are taking place. Participants will hopefully leave with a better understanding of the interaction between forest management and wildlife habitat and be able to incorporate some of these techniques on their own private lands.

The tour will begin at 9:00am at the Black Forest Conservation Association. The Black Forest Conservation Association is located at 189 Back Road, in Coudersport. The tour will conclude at 2:00 pm. The tour is free of charge. Transportation and lunch will be provided. If you have any questions regarding the tour or would like to register for the tour, please call the district office at 814-274-3600 or email at fd15@pa.gov .
