Classroom theory and skills necessary to be able to collect blood samples from patients and prepare it for further medical testing will be the focus of this course, which is a cooperative effort between PA College of Technology and the Potter County Education Council. An externship at a clinical facility will allow students to gain experience with patients and laboratory personnel. Students are provided with the practical skills and information needed to sit for the National Healthcareer Association Phlebotomy Certification exam and to gain employment as a phlebotomy technician.

Prerequisites: Must meet pre-admission requirements including high school diploma or GED, physical exam with proof of immunizations and/or titers required by clinical agency, ability to meet physical demands of working in a health care facility, background checks clear of prohibitive offenses, prior experience working in a health care setting or health care educational background, and a $50 non-refundable application fee. Students must have a working knowledge of medical terminology, HIPAA, and infection control, and basic computer skills.

Classes will be held 2 evenings per week starting in mid-June at the Potter County Education Council, and will continue through the end of July. Clinical will be scheduled for 1 week in August. The Certification Exam will be given when all students have completed their required sticks. Clinical will be scheduled in various hospitals and clinics within a 50-mile radius of the classroom. Students must have reliable transportation and be able to complete clinical during daytime hours. All classroom and clinical hours must be successfully completed to be eligible for certification.

Cost for this course is $1290 and includes textbook and cost of certification exam. There is no financial aid available through the College. For an application or more information, contact PA College of Technology at (570) 724-7703.
