Senator Pat Toomey: Fighting Corporate Welfare: Defunding The Sugar Program

Senator Pat Toomey

Fighting Corporate Welfare: Defunding The Sugar Program
The government's wasteful sugar policy hikes costs of everyday foods containing sugar.  This program must stop.
The government's sugar program is corporate welfare, plain and simple. This disastrous policy kills jobs, harms food manufacturers, and hikes food costs for families. I am fighting to end it.
With Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), I am introducing an amendment to the appropriations bill funding the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that would prohibit federal handouts to the nation's largest sugar companies.
Currently, the USDA gives subsidized loans to U.S. sugar companies and, if their profits become too low, USDA uses taxpayer dollars to purchase large quantities of sugar to artificially inflate prices. This sugar is then sold to ethanol producers at a loss to the federal government.
I have long advocated for reform of the government's wasteful sugar program. Congress can - and should - rein in this flawed policy. To do that, we must stop using taxpayer funds on this program.

I don't think they could have used a less flattering photo for the group if they tried.
