State trooper receives unique wheelchair

By Dan Carrigan

LEWISBERRY, Pa. (WHTM) - State Trooper Jean Altomari was all smiles as she took her new all-terrain wheelchair for a spin in York County Friday night.

She is the recipient of an Action Trackstander, which can not only tackle smooth and rough path’s, it can also stand her upright.

“It’s a little overwhelming. I just keep thinking about how many people really need a chair like this,” Altomari said.

Altomari was left paralyzed from the waist down after a tragic car accident while on vacation in Mexico four years ago.

On Friday, she traveled to Ed Fisher’s home in Fairview Township. Fisher is a dealer for Trackstander. The wheelchair is valued at $18,000 and was donated by groups like the Gary Sinise Foundation and the Independence Fund after the groups heard her story.

“It's an amazing experience every time one of these chairs goes to one of our veterans, it goes to a first responder,” Fisher said.

Jean, a Delaware County resident, was and is still with the state police. She is on active permanent limited duty serving in the bureau of criminal investigation interdiction

“I never even imagined something like this, just all the things that you can do,” Altomari said.
