Pennsylvania Dept. Of Agriculture News

Sept. 5, 2014

Message from George Greig
Secretary of Agriculture
When the storms Irene and Lee hit PA three years ago, many farmers experienced major setbacks. PDA and USDA secured crop insurance aid for those who needed it the most. Our risk mgm't tools worked, but I knew they could work better. When it came time for the country to prepare the 2014 Farm Bill, we talked with producers and crop insurance experts and worked with other state ag depts and our congressional delegation. We advocated for stronger provisions to benefit more farmers. We asked for streamlined policies and procedures to enhance crop insurance, and requested more flexibility in production recordkeeping requirm'ts. So when the new farm bill emerged, it placed an emphasis on risk mgm't, not on making direct payments to farmers. Four disaster programs were indefinitely extended, and now producers don't have to purchase crop insurance or NAP coverage to be eligible for disaster assistance. Best of all, we helped convince Washington D.C. that gov't-mandated dairy supply controls were not the way to go. We will have more details in the coming weeks on how we've helped improve crop insurance for PA.
