Bird Banding Demonstration In McKean County

The Allegheny Highlands Bird Club recently received a demonstration from club member, John Fedak, about banding processes for birds.

Fedak caught two song sparrows in barely visible nets placed in brush along Marvin Creek and, after very carefully removing the small birds from the netting in order not to injure the bird, demonstrated the proper methods for adding small, metal bands to the tiny legs of the birds.
He also demonstrated methods to determine important aspects of the bird such as the measurement of the wing span, gender and age of the bird.

In addition to members of the bird club who were present for the demonstration, University of Pittsburgh at Bradford student from an environmental club, joined the bird group and collected insects.

There have been over 40 species of birds banded at the Marvin Creek site behind the 911 center by Fedak this season, and he has spotted 230 different species of birds in the county this year.
The demonstration was followed by the club’s regular monthly meeting in the 911 Building. The erection of an eagle or osprey nest either at Hamlin Lake or on county property near the Poor Farm, and the erection of interpretive signs to be placed on the Shawmut Trail next spring were discussed.

The bird club is open to new members and their Facebook site can be visited at: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Allegheny-Highlands-Bird-Club/111215068977063
