Think About It

Significance

It has been said that the most important days in a person’s life are the day that they were born and the day they found out why.

Many have searched for significance only to have what gave them significance end. Those that find significance in their jobs will one day retire. Those that have it in their spouses or children can have that interrupted by divorce and an empty nest. It isn’t unusual for older people to wonder if anyone knew who they used to be.

I suppose that ones significance has to be in something greater than them, but played out in individual things along the way. In other words, I can have significance in my job, spouse, children or a host of other things, but they are not the one thing but rather part of the main thing.

There was a time in my life that I wanted to be someone else. I didn’t like the way I talked, didn’t feel I had what people needed, I was too short, not smart enough and the list went on. All the while I was telling God that someday I’d be great for him. In the end he told me to just be who I was, he was already happy with that. I found out I had significance even with my imperfections and even though I might not like the way I was, God was happy with me. It was at that point that I started to understand that significance wasn’t about what I did, but rather who I was on the inside. I had purpose and that purpose could be put into action right at the moment and didn’t have to wait until I was somebody.

Did you know that the same potter who made the chalice for the King also made the chamber pot for the King’s bed? Serving in the function for which you were designed makes you significant and gives you a purpose. You don’t have to go out looking for it, it’s already right in front of you to grasp hold of. Think about it.
