Potter County Native New Warden At Lewisburg Federal 

Warden: Most do jobs with pride

LEWISBURG — David J. Ebbert, the newly tapped warden at U.S. Penitentiary in Lewisburg, is not a fan of The Shawshank Redemption.

The popular 1994 movie portrays the warden as corrupt and corrections officers as sadistic, stereotypes Ebbert abhors.

In reality, he said, prison administrators and staff accept an “incredible amount of responsibility” and most do their job with pride.

Ebbert, 50, started his new position at the Lewisburg facility on Sept. 18, but has known several staff members or their relatives since he began his career there as a corrections officer in 1988.

The Potter County native steadily rose through the ranks, leaving the Union County prison in 1992 for an assistant employee services manager position at a federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana. Ebbert returned to the Valley in 1995 to take a similar job at Allenwood and by 2002 he was promoted to associate warden at a Minnesota prison. He later served as warden at two other facilities he’d previously worked at in Allenwood and Terre Haute.  Read more.....
