Allegany Township Agrees To Continue Fire / EMS Contracts

yes yes

One item of information is missing. The township collected 3 mills of taxes every year for fire protection and only used 1 of the mills for fire protection. Where is the revenue from the other 2 mills going back year after year after year?

crazy people---there was never a question of whether they would have protection--just how much they could squeeze out of the township. go to a township meeting before running your mouth off next time!!!

Could all or part of the other 2 mil have gone for workers comp insurance?

@ Friday, December 12, 2014 at 11:36:00 AM EST: Since local Volunteer fire departments are not taxing authorities (the municipalities, school boards and counties are), you might want to ask someone other than Chief Phelps where the tax money goes. Just a thought.

@ Friday, December 12, 2014 at 2:54:00 PM EST: You are talking about lateral support. Don’t do it, lose out on PA and federal grants—that part is correct. Does Allegany TWP have a VFD? I honestly don’t know. If not (no fire department in that municipality); there is no lateral support and they must contract residents (and businesses and governments)fire protection (wholely) out to neighbors. Nothing is free.

The old days of just a bunch of good-ole-boys hanging out at the hall ready to drag a hose are done. Now, while there may be a bunch of good-ole-boys at the hall… In order for them to respond they must meet mandated qualifications. That may mean training that costs $$$ and requires time off work. That means gear for individual firefighters (and not the closest size that almost fits you as you run out the door).

I am not now, nor have I ever been a fireman—I didn’t even stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. But with the qualifications and recurring training .our volunteers must complete, the individual gear that they deserve to protect themselves (while they protect us), and the expanding missions (types of responses) I just don’t see how chicken barbeques, bingo, and wedding receptions can pay for it all.

And as another visitor had posted, these fire departments must be insured—not just for workman’s comp but for liability. All these things cost money folks. I certainly hope none of you believe that burden should also fall on our individual volunteers.

On another note to Chief Phelps… you are a community leader. Please lead with you grammar as well. FARE(vs fair) might be somewhat accurate (as a pun) for the funds changing hands. LAP (vs lapse) on the other hand…….Well….
