Grand Opening Held at New Shinglehouse Facility

Grand Opening Held at New Shinglehouse Facility; Dr. Barke Honored by community

Officials from the Cole Memorial Medical Group and UPMC Hamot in Erie hosted a grand opening celebration on Tuesday afternoon at the new Shinglehouse Community Health Center building.

Cole Memorial and UPMC Hamot collaborated on the project to replace the former Shinglehouse Health Center located on Lyons Street and the Rehabilitation Services office inside the Hewitt Manor property with a new 8,311-square-foot facility on North Puritan Street in the Shinglehouse Borough.

“We are very proud to partner with Cole Memorial on this project in the Shinglehouse community,” said UPMC Hamot’s Senior Vice President of Business Development Gary Maras. “For about the last 10 years, we’ve spent time working with our regional partners to help deliver local, quality care throughout western Pennsylvania and Western New York.”

The prior Shinglehouse Health Center was operated by Cole Memorial for 35 years. The staff and family practitioners, James “Sandy” Barke, MD and Eric Schreiber, PA-C, will continue to provide patient care at the new facility but are joined by Cole’s Shinglehouse Rehabilitation Services team and several new specialty medicine providers.

In January, board certified family medicine physician A. Ramani Arya, MD will begin accepting patients in the Shinglehouse office, as well.

As part of the celebration, the Mayor of Shinglehouse Bonnie Hunt presented a special commendation and plaque to Dr. Barke for his dedication to providing excellent health care in the community for 25 years.

“We came here today to dedicate this beautiful new facility, proving that Shinglehouse continues to move forward and to thank Cole Memorial for investing in our community,” said Mayor Hunt. “Today is also a special day because I’m naming the Mayor’s Excellence Award and this year was an easy choice. Dr. Barke has given so much of himself and he’s cared for us above and beyond, to make lives better.”

Tours of the new offices and commemorative ornaments were given to approximately 60 attendees at the event, giving the public a view of the state-of-the-art facility. Refreshments were also offered while visitors participated in foot screenings and other health activities.

In addition to eight exam rooms, the new Health Center houses a laboratory draw station a diagnostic imaging room, space for consultations or rotating specialists plus, a comfortable, spacious waiting room. A telemedicine suite was added to the plans so patients can soon see and speak with specialists at UPMC Hamot.

“I think as you walk through this wonderful facility, you’ll see that you as a community will be able to continue to experience the wonderful care that you deserve,” said Dave Crandall, chairman of the Board at Cole Memorial.
