House Votes To Cut Pay & Benefits For Military / Thompson Votes Against Bill

Thompson Opposes Pay and Benefit Reductions to Active Duty Military, Votes in Opposition to National Defense Authorization

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Glenn 'GT' Thompson (PA-5) today voted to oppose H.R. 5759, the Fiscal Year 2015 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The legislation passed the House by a vote of 300-119.

"Reducing pay and benefits for our active duty soldiers and their families, without instituting broader reforms to reduce waste, fraud and abuse is not something I can support. Men and women in the armed forces put their lives on the line for this country and should not be used as an offset for Washington’s budgetary shortfalls,” said Rep. Thompson.

H.R. 5759 reduces pay and benefits for servicemembers and their families, including reductions in pay for Active Duty soldiers, reductions in the basic allowance for housing (BAH), and increased pharmacy fees and copays.

"On top of reductions in pay and benefit cuts, critical mental health provisions that previously passed the House with bipartisan support were not included in the final legislation. Congress missed an opportunity to fix the way the military identifies and addresses behavioral health conditions among incoming recruits and our soldiers; this is unacceptable,” Thompson stated.

The Medical Evaluation Parity for Servicemembers (MEPS) Act, which passed in May 2014 as part of the House's version of the 2015 NDAA and has been endorsed by over 40 military, veteran, and mental health advocacy groups, would institute a preliminary mental health assessment for all incoming military recruits.

The MEPS Act provisions were removed from the final House-Senate NDAA agreement (H.R. 5759).

“These provisions would have offered our military another tool to improve suicide prevention, and perhaps even prevent future mass shootings, such as the one that took place at the Washington Navy Yard in September 2013,” Thompson added.

“The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is disappointed to hear the MEPS Act will be removed once again from the NDAA,” stated Mr. Raymond Kelley, VFW’s National Legislative Director, a supporting organization of the MEPS Act. “We will continue to work with Congressman Thompson to pass this much needed provision.”

Where is a bill to cut Congress's healthcare benefits and increase there participation fees. Who is congress protecting and taking care of these days.If armed forces aren't getting any respect, who is left. We have always historically done our best to take care of them. What is going on? Or better yet, when are we going to collectively start fixing it

Our military is already TOO UNDERPAID!! If it wasn't for them risking their life these worthless house and senate SOB's wouldn't be making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year!! Wow, just goes to show the government does not give a rats ass about anyone!!

All part of Satan's ... errr, I mean President's plan to allow our enemy a free pass into our country to destroy us.

My husband is in the Air Force Reserves and his monthly paycheck doesn't even cover our medical insurance payment through Tricare, let alone co-payments and medications! I think this is ridiculous.

The bum in the white said during the presidential debates he was going to cut the military back to pre World war 2 levels. Yet he won two elections ! Now with all the illegals getting amnesty the US is fast becoming and will be a third world nation!

What a disgrace to even consider cutting military pay. If anything we should increase their pay as their job is not 8 hrs a day it is 24hrs, 7 days a week and 365 days a year!

sequestration has consequences. can't keep cutting taxes for the wealthy and funding everything we want to fund.
this isn't coming from the white house; the bill is from congress and has been in the works for some time. has nothing to do with immigration either. get your head out of your behind. this is tea party inspired legislation.
unless sequestration ends, there will be more of this.
really bad idea to cut these men and women after signing up. it isn't like they can just walk away and look for another job.
they could cut the benes and pensions for some of the retired military brass. they get a windfall plus social security when they come of age.

We should be giving them the best that we can offer and no the retired brass shouldn't be cut back either they need our respect after all they are brave and strong fighting so we can have a secure and more promising future. This is a big disgrace.

Who controls the house and senate? Oh the republicans. That's right. But no one will say a thing about who to blame it on. Bunch of ignorance and stupidity. Thanks republicans. Showing exactly what your agenda is.

I agree with all comments except one' Being retired military since 1979 ,the hand writting on the walls to push the current administration's policies. Commander-in-chief wants to destroy current military and establish his own. Why did he order Home land security in first place to obtain billions of rounds of ammo and equipment when first elected? Why has he removed most officers and senior enlisted men from service, He wants yes men only to declare Martial Law because of the current race baited riots that has been created by him,Holder,Sharpton and Jackson His forcing good personal from services. I wrote of this very thing over three years ago in my letters that we would see riots and race warfare You said I was nuts, well how do you like it now. It has come to America and soon will spread. Enough Said,Fred's Dead.

the only thing keeps this Country ssafe is a strong Military and the most advanced weapons in the world. You want quality troops they need to be paid and then they need to be csared for when they come home from battle. Look how our VietNam Vets are treated to this day. Put a stop to foregin aid and apply the funds to keeping this Country stong. get rid of the excess baggage in Congress.

God and the solider all men adore in time of war and then no more. For when the war is over and thinbgs are righted God is forgotten and the solider is slighted.

David Stockman, President Reagan's budget director called the military retirement system a disgrace.
You've all been blinded by your patriotism.
How many of you even know the pension amounts for retired high-ranking officers? They rake in huge sums, then sit on boards of defense industries and think tanks, and not all of them are combat vets either.
I'd like to see the money go to treat the wounded and grunts who fought, not all the big wigs who draw in excess on 100k per year, then get more when the reach retirement age for social security.
sequestration is from the GOP. And yes, the Tea Party DOES want to cut, only they're too chickenshit to spell out exactly where and how. So they give the military less than they need, and leave it to others to figure out where it has to be. it will continue until sequestration ends.
I know people in the Dept of Defense and you're naïve to think things will remain as is because you believe they need to. Won't happen. We get what and who we vote for, and we voted to shrink spending, so get used to it.

It really amazes me how some of the people on this site are actually blaming President Obama for this. I even saw him blamed for the shutdown - a result of Tea Party and Republicans. President Obama has nothing to do with this proposed reduction in pay for the military. The House is, as was already pointed out, controlled by the Republicans. No matter what good the President has been trying to do, the GOP (what exactly is grand about them) is determined to keep it from happening. They follow the big money. They work for the big money. Now they will be in charge of both the House and the Senate. Goodbye VA benefits, clean air and water, edible food, Medicare as we know it, everything the DEMOCRATS fight for. I am looking forward to seeing just how the local Republicans manage to blame all the bad on the Democrats then. You see what you want to see, hear what you want to hear.

Are all you right-wingers really that stupid about our government or are you just too blinded by your hatred of our President to see the truth? CONGRESS (The US HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES) passed this bill. THE US HOUSE IS CONTROLLED BY REPUBLICANS! That's the facts but you could care less about FACTS!
