John G. Hastings, Jr., 82, Frederick, MD; Blossburg Native Drove for Kennedy, Johnson & Nixon Families

John G. Hastings, Jr., 82, died on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at Somerford Place Assisted Living, Frederick, MD. 

He was born May 25, 1932 in Blossburg, PA, the son of the late John G. and Rachel (Brown) Hastings, Sr.

US Marines
John was a US Marine, having served in the Korean War from 1951-1954. In John’s case he enlisted in the US Army in 1956. One year later he was transferred to Paris, France and became a chauffeur for the Chiefs of Staff at SHAPE. In 1961, John was transferred to Washington, D.C. and assigned to the White House. John spent the next 12 years driving for Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and their respective families. Of the three White House families he worked for, John enjoyed the Kennedys most. He had many fond memories and mementos of all the families he served. John became an OTR truck driver for McLean and Yellow, after leaving the White House in 1973, when he retired from the US Army.

Surviving are his son, Gregg A. Hastings of Ashburn, VA; three daughters, Patricia A. Larrivee and Dawn M. Hastings, both of Wellsboro, PA; Kathleen R. Hoffman (Christopher) of Cedar Grove, NC; three brothers, Stanley Hastings, Emporium, PA; William Hastings, Syracuse, NY and Richard Hastings, Wellsboro, PA; two sisters, Margaret Hastings and Marjorie Freeman, both of Wellsboro, PA; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Friends and family are invited to John’s Life Celebration on Sunday, December 14, 2014 from 12-2 PM, at Tussey-Mosher Funeral Home, Ltd. , ”A Life Celebration Home”, 139 Main Street, Wellsboro, PA. Funeral service to follow at 2:00 PM, with the Rev. Dr. Roger Wagner officiating. Burial in West Branch Cemetery, with full military honors.
