Potter County budget includes slight increase, no per capita tax

Potter County budget includes slight increase, no per capita tax

By Amanda Jones
Potter Leader-Enterprise

Potter County Commissioners announced at their Nov. 26 meeting that the proposed 2015 county budget will be available for review beginning on Thursday, Dec. 4, at the Gunzburger Building in Coudersport.

According to commissioners, a tax increase of 0.5 mills is expected, but the per capita tax will be suspended for 2015. While the millage increase equates to an increase of approximately $11 per household for all landowners, not collecting the per capita tax will save each adult individual $5 per year.

The revenue decrease from the suspension of the per capita tax is offset by funds received through the natural gas impact fee.

Commissioners said that county department heads made every attempt to keep the budget even with last year, but the increasing costs of most county-funded programs required the nominal increase.

The budget is expected to be adopted at the commissioners meeting scheduled to be held for Dec. 24. Read more...

A $11 increase in taxes for all landowners is simply unacceptable. We're taxed way to much as it is now!

1:52, if you can't afford $11 per year, quit working at McDonald's or more realistically, get a job.

well 3:38 if they are working at McDonalds kudos to them for having a job! maybe your the one with out a job that don't have to pay taxes that's why 11 dollars don't seem to bother you.

I think it's pretty pathetic that there is any kind of outcry about a tax increase that comes out to about 80 cents a month. It actually comes out to basically nothing a month if you have two adults in your house since they did away with the stupid per capita tax which is $10 a year for 2 people. I have no problem with this. It is the school taxes and the state and federal income taxes that are killing our family. This is nothing.

3:38 your probable not a land owner so keep you mouth shut all the burden falls on us land owners. Potter county maybe they should try a budget like us land owners have to every time they want more money for one of their golf trips or something like that they raise taxes. I wish every time I wanted more money because I can't budget I could go to my boss and say $1.00 more an hour, because I don't know how to budget because of wasteful spending would be nice wouldn't it.

It’s not the $11 a month or the .80c a day, it’s that it always rolls down hill and Joe & Mary Sixpak are always the one who have to pay, from local, state & federal.

Many people are fed up and tired of it. They do everything they can to keep up, try to get ahead and provide for their family.

Sometimes all the while watching the freeloading welfare fake disability moochers have it as good as they do.

So dismount from your high horse for a minute and consider the bigger picture and don’t wail on someone for speaking out about a tax increase just because your job allows you “to be fine with it” or you view it as no big deal. $11 here $11 there, it all adds up for most of us.

It is just that some people just wake up sooner than others.

Try living in the Austin area with the tax and spend liberal mentality of the school and local government!

Relying on the gas impact fee are we? With the falling gas and oil prices it doesn't make a lot of sense. Now if we were charging a withdrawal tax to the gas and oil industry I could see it.

and they said taxes wont get raised cause of the money from drilling.where is all this money government coke heads??

These Liberal Tax polices are the reason I am a tea bagger! Vote for a teabagger. We are the only real Americans. Just read your Bibles and pray! These heathens will be run out of the government! From the lips of Dady bush. NO NEW TAXES

To 4:06 and 5:54, I have been employed since graduating from college in 2009, and I am a landowner so this will also affect me. I can understand complaining about tax increases when it creates a significant burden on the taxpayer, but I don't see $11/year being that huge burden that will put anyone out on the street. All you people want to do is complain. Be thankful that with our falling population that it is only an $11/year increase, it could've been a higher millage rate and then you really would be having an issue.

An impact fee is like paying to be cozy on a first date and getting it free every date after. An extraction fee is like paying for it every time you go on a date.

Which brings in more money? And why is every other state doing it and not PA?

9:08 Its not the $11/yr that is bothering most. Its the principal of the tax increase in a local economy that is already taxed at a much higher rate than should be. maybe we need to look at scaling back our local govenment or reducing spending instead of another tax increase. Take a walk down main street and look at the empty bulidings. How about the Northern that has sat empty for 10 to 12 yrs. Check out the taxes on these places... over $8,000/yr on the Northern... Many of the homes that were build when adelphia was booming are taxed at incredibly high rates. We need to be encouraging people to move here and start up business, but we are doing the exact opposite by increasing taxes.

The issue is raising taxes. If you read the minutes of the commissioners' meetings on Solomons, you will find they pretty much consist of three yes votes for EVERYTHING. Any request for money is approved and most without discussion. Why not cut some spending? At least bring that up for a vote and see if the unanimous yes votes still happen. Also, how much of a windfall did the county get from the gas impact fee last year? This year? Is it a half million or a million or more? How about giving that money back to the landowner/taxpayers? At the least, don't RAISE our taxes. Has there been an accounting of this money and how it has been spent-is it in the budget?

Maybe we all would have more cash if the Federal government would stop giving all our cash away to other Countries, and funding programs for people that are not citizens. If this would be done then more cash would be available to pay local taxes. just saying

the per capita, also know as "the privilege to work tax" is a joke. why should an able body person have to pay because they have a job and the slobs on welfare don't?
