Cole Hospital's CEO Ed Pitchford recognized by the AHA
Over the past several years, Pitchford and his leadership team have transformed Cole Memorial.
Ed Pitchford |
“To be named among the other leaders in the country as a 2014 AHA Grassroots Champion is truly an honor,” says Pitchford.
Pitchford has been a national and state advocate for rural health care in the region throughout his health care administration career—over 30 years. He was named the CEO of Cole Memorial in June 2007.
Over the past several years, Pitchford and his leadership team, with the support of the board of directors, have transformed Cole Memorial.
“Our industry leaders know that we can improve the value of the products that we offer to the public and are encouraging organizations across the country to reduce unnecessary spending, improve patient outcomes and eliminate avoidable harm to patients along the way,” says Pitchford. “Our organization is a leader in rural America, and I’m pleased that the American Hospital Association and others are recognizing us for this work.”
Among other organizations, Pitchford is an active member of the Pennsylvania Mountains Healthcare Alliance; the Pennsylvania Rural Health Association; and the National Rural Health Association, including participation in its Rural Fellowship program.

Thomas Named Educator of The Year
DEF Board Member David Bish presented Wildlife Technology Instructor Emily Thomas with the DEF Educator of the Year Award during Saturday's Commencement Luncheon. |
DuBOIS – Instructor in Wildlife Technology Emily Thomas has been named the DuBois Educational Foundation (DEF) Educator of the Year at Penn State DuBois. She was presented with the award during the annual Commencement Luncheon held on campus Saturday. Nominations for the award come from the students themselves, and each year the DEF presents the award to a Penn State DuBois faculty member who has made a difference in the lives of students.
Thomas, herself is an alumna of the Penn State DuBois Wildlife Technology program. She works closely with students during both classroom activities and outdoor labs. She has a particular research focus on birds.
"As well as being a top-notch teacher, Ms. Thomas is an excellent advisor," said DEF Board Member David Bish, who presented the award. "She goes above and beyond offering curricular guidance by coaching students on the preparation of job applications, résumés, and cover letters.
"Ms. Thomas offers many other opportunities for students to work with other agencies and organizations around the state, such as deer or turkey trapping with the Pennsylvania Game Commission or Northern Goshawk nest searching in the Allegheny National Forest or even bird banding at public banding demonstrations," Bish said.
One student who nominated Thomas for the award said, "She is the best advisor I ever had. I have learned a great deal from her and landed two jobs over the last two summers with her help on my résumés and cover letters. Her labs are very hands-on and always fun."
Thomas humbly explained that all the things she does that earned her this honor, are things she does simply for the love of doing them. She said, "I'm very grateful. Everything the students mentioned I realy enjoy doing. So, it's nice to be honored with this award from my students for doing what I love. An honor from them is the greatest accomplishment. They are why we are here."

BEMUS POINT, N.Y. (WIVB) 66 year old Robert W. Knell of Duke Center, PA died Saturday morning in the WCA Hospital in Jamestown after his boat capsized in Chautauqua Lake, near Bemus Point, Friday afternoon.
New York State Police say the 12 foot fishing boat that Knell and 65 year old Roy Barclay were in, capsized due to high winds and heavy rain.
Although he was rushed to the hospital after being rescued from the water, Police say Knell died due to complications related to a lack of oxygen during the accident.

Nate Taylor writes about Proposal to Allow ISP's To Charge For Faster Access to Internet
A little more complicated:
ISP's would would create a "block" price for regular internet access at regular speeds. ISP's could then charge companies for faster access to their sites (such as Netflix) or programs (such as World of Warcraft). If the companies choose not to pay, then the access to their sites or programs would be at regular speeds.
Imagine, you are surfing the internet using the "regular" speeds, which could be as slow as dial-up. Then, if Netflix or Blizzard didn't want to pay for the faster speeds through your ISP, then you would be forced to deal with those slow speeds when trying to watch a movie or play a game while other people with different ISP's would have a faster connection.
This could ultimately come down to having to go with a competitive company with HORRIBLE prices and/or support because you want to be able to watch a movie or play a game online. This can result in an increase in member prices for companies like Netflix and Blizzard.
Here's an example for you:
Company A, a large ISP, proposes a good price for faster speeds to Netflix and Blizzard. Both Netflix and Blizzard agree to the contract. Company A lowers their overall speeds but offer a faster speed when watching Netflix or playing "World of Warcraft". Company A charges $60 a month for their internet.
Company B, a small local ISP, wasn't able to propose as good of a contract as Company A. Blizzard accepts the contract, but Netflix refuses the contract. Company B lowers their average speed (including Netflix) but speeds it up for Blizzard. Company B charges $60 a month for their Internet.
Company C, a random ISP, decides that they don't want to change their speed packages and leaves all their speeds the same. They charge $60 a month for their internet.
As a result, Netflix raises their membership prices to $15 a month for everyone. Blizzard raises the price for World of Warcraft to $20 a month for everyone.
Some people won't be able to sign up for services with the company that offers a better deal for them. Some may want to watch Netflix but are only able to connect with Company B because Company A or C doesn't service their area. Finally, even if you are in an area that is covered by Company C and don't have anything change with your speeds, you are still forced to pay more in order to watch Netflix or play World of Warcraft.
Feel free to replace company names in this example with things like eBay or Amazon or Facebook. Imagine, because Facebook now has to pay in order for customers to be able to access their site, they are now charging for a membership in order to use their apps or you aren't able to play Farmville because the speeds aren't as high anymore.
Think about it. I'm against it, how about you. Contact the FCC and let them know.

Chainsaw Carving
Chainsaw Carving
During this hands-on course you will learn carving techniques, how to choose the right wood, the carving process from planning to detail work, and how to finish and care for your carvings. You will also learn many different types of cuts and techniques to add beauty to your work. In addition, chainsaw and carving safety will be covered throughout the course. The instructors for this course are Rick and Zoë Boni. The Boni family is widely known and respected by the chainsaw carving community, and they are among the best in the business. Rick has won too many carving competitions to mention, has been featured on Fox, CBS and Public Broadcasting, does demonstrations around the world through Masters of the Chainsaw, and has been a judge at many of the best chainsaw carving competitions in the world. In the past 5 years, Zoë has won several competitions and has also been the featured artist on DIY Woodworking. Both have experience teaching chainsaw carving. If you are interested in chainsaw carving to start a side business or as a hobby, this course is ideal for you. Over the four evenings, you will have the opportunity to complete at least one carving, and in the past, many students have been able to complete multiple carvings during this course.
Chainsaws, carving equipment, and wood will be provided. There will be a limited number of chaps available for use; however, we recommend that if you have chaps or chainsaw pants that you bring them with you. Participants are also asked to wear work boots and jeans each day for safety reasons.
This class is part of a series of workshops being taught by regional artists including: Jessie Vaughn, Curt Weinhold, Julie Mader, and Rick and Zoë Boni. Thanks to a PPA Grant provided by the PA Council on the Arts, these workshops are being offered at a reduced rate with the goals of raising awareness of the arts in Potter and McKean Counties, and providing those interested in developing or improving their artistic skills with opportunities to do so. These workshops are supported in part by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
This class is being held Monday through Thursday, May 19 - 22, 2014, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Potter County Education Council’s Port Allegany office. The cost is $370.00 per person. To register, visit www.pottercountyedcouncil.org or call (814) 545-1333.

Ambulance Dispatched For Tazer Intervention / 2 Emporium Residents Jailed In Lieu Of Bail

Address: AREA OF 200 E ALLEGANY AVE
City: EMPORIUM
Cross Streets: E 6TH STREET EXT * N SPRUCE ST
TAZER INTERVENTION
Agency: EMPORIUM AMBULANCE

Emporium Police officers called for an ambulance to check out a person who they reportedly tazered Friday while making an arrest in Emporium Boro.
A relative of the persons arrested posted a photo on Facebook calling the tazering police brutality and unnecessary. Here's the post Amber Moate asked everyone to share:
https://www.facebook.com/amber.moate?fref=photo |
We've only seen Amber's description of what happened, but Emporium Police arrested the people below shown in the District Court online documents below for some pretty serious charges. They were arraigned and sent to jail in lieu of $20,000. cash bail each set by District Judge Barry Brown.
Judge Brown does not fax us affidavits of probable cause, so we can't tell you what the officers side of this story is. Perhaps they will fax us their affidavits or a news release to 814-544-9907 so we can hear their side of the story.

Think About It
Battery Depleted
This morning I went to go on my laptop computer and noticed that I had only 17% battery life left. I knew that I needed to get it plugged into a power source quickly before it died completely. Getting it plugged in would seem to be an easy remedy but if the power is out to the house, it won’t change my situation at all.
It’s funny how we have come to rely upon electricity and other such everyday conveniences. To live without them would be a great inconvenience, yet we take them for granted and may have no idea of what life would be like without them. I believe that we do the same with life. We take things for granted. Relationships, money, life and death, all seem to be just something that we deal with when we have to. In the meantime, we seem to believe that if it’s not broken, why fix it. Unfortunately our batteries can be becoming depleted and we’re not even aware of it. In other words, relationships can go south and we’re unaware that anything has gone wrong. Health can be deteriorating and we oblivious to the warnings signs. We continue moving forward as if nothing were going to happen. We live day to day with no concern for what might be coming tomorrow.
There was a man who was constantly pushing forward with new investments. Without a care, he focused on acquiring new things. He never considered this life, its meaning or purpose. He only lived for today without a thought of his future. He didn’t know that his battery was being depleted. But one day everything came to an end because he died. We can be just like that man. We can live life like there is no tomorrow. We don’t take time to invest in the relationships around us. We don’t plan for the future and we don’t take care of our physical health. We have no concept that our batteries need to be charged. How do we know if we’re like that? We simply need to stop and do some heart-felt questions. We also need to ask those that are already in our lives. They will often see the warnings signs even if we don’t. Think about it.
