Rotary Learns About Long Farms And Where Their Products Are Sold
Speakers:Wayne Irish,Farm Manager,Ruth Sallade, Carl Long,Owner of Long Farms |
Utz is the brand where most of their potatoes go. Companies that use the products are: Kelloggs, Utz, Poptarts, Kit Kats, Wal Mart, Cedar Creek, Great Value and Seabrook.
If they run out of potatoes in March, they start again in Aug. They work as a team, just like Rotary does because they also have really good people.
In turf grass, they send sod to many places: Pocono Raceway NASCAR the #2 turn has their grass, Bradner Stadium, St. Gabriels in Port Allegany, 2 football fields in Stroudsburg, 10,000 square feet to the Coudersport Golf Course, and to the Air Force Reserve in Pittsburgh. The first of Sept. they send out 6 truckloads of sod.

First Night First Light Event at Lyman Run
First Night First Light Event at Lyman Run
First Night-First Light will be held on the evening of January 1st from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm.
Across the top of the dam luminary bags will be set in place and if the weather and wind permit, luminary balloons, courtesy of Swan’s Garage in Galeton, will be lit and floated across the ice of the lake. Bring your cameras and bring the family out for what is going to be a visually stunning event.
This event is free of charge and free tickets to the upcoming ICE-O-RAMA event will be handed out to all who attend. ICE-O-RAMA is scheduled to be held on January 31 and the unveiling of the thought-to-be-extinct Giant Ice Shark of Lyman Run will be the highlight of the event.
If you are planning to attend First Night-First Light, please bring along some flashlights as the park is not lit at night. Park staff will assist with parking and volunteers will guide you along your way. Bundle up as it tends to be chilly on the dam.
In the event of extremely poor weather, this event will be held the following night on Jan. 2nd.

Sweden Valley Manor Annual Christmas Party
Sweden Valley Manor hosted their Annual Christmas Party for patients, residents and their families. The day consisted of hors d’oeuvres, carved ham with all the fixings followed by Christmas carols and Santa Claus.
Each resident and patient was adopted by either an employee of Sweden Valley Manor or a community group. This assured that each resident/patient received at least one gift from Santa.
The afternoon was filled with the sounds and sights of Christmastime. Children from the Austin School District arrived donned with Santa hats to sing Christmas carols; Barb Headley, Resident Services Coordinator of Sweden Valley Manor played lovely piano music; the lounges, the dining room and the activity room were exquisitely decorated to welcome each guest.
Keeping with the magic of the season, no one was aware that Santa Claus was really Congressmen Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson, U.S. Representative for Pennsylvania's 5th congressional district. Congressman Thompson, originally was to attend the Garden Party this past August, but was called in to Congress at the last minute. He promised to visit in the near future. Congressman Thompson handed out all gifts to each resident and patient. He also took the time for photo opportunities and visited residents in their rooms.
Activity Coordinator Debbie McKee, recently named the Volunteer Alzheimer’s Association Ambassador for the 5th district, works closely with Congressman Thompson and his office in order to pass the National HOPE for Alzheimer’s Act – Health Outcomes, Planning, and Education (HOPE) for Alzheimer’s Act (S.709 / H.R. 1507).
Whether you are interested in post-hospital rehabilitation, chronic disease management, rehabilitation to home, Sweden Valley Manor, is there to meet your care and rehabilitative needs. Experience the HCF Difference, with Sweden Valley Manor.
HCF Management Inc., has remained family-owned and operated since 1968. Offering care communities in Ohio and Pennsylvania, HCF ensures that each care community provides exceptional care and the highest quality of life for residents. Each HCF managed care community has a reputation as a community leader-providing an array of support ranging from skilled nursing care and rehabilitative services to assisted living services.

Multi-Year License Discounts Available Only Through December
Multi-Year License Discounts Available Only Through December
HARRISBURG, Pa. (Dec. 19) — Individuals looking for last-minute holiday gifts have just two weeks left to “Catch the Value” and take advantage of price reductions on multi-year fishing licenses for the 2015 season. (Twitter - #CatchTheValue)
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) has lowered the price of three-year and five-year fishing licenses by $3 and $5, respectively. It’s the first time in its history that the agency has reduced the price of a license.
But the lower prices for multi-year licenses are available only during December. The licenses return to full price in January.
“I think a price reduction will catch the attention of many people who haven’t fished in a few years, or who have wanted to try fishing,” said PFBC Executive Director John Arway, who said the promotional move is intended to highlight the sport’s affordability to families and younger audiences and to persuade lapsed anglers to return.
With the discount, the price of a 3-year senior resident license is $27; 3-year resident $60; 3-year non-resident $150; 5-year senior resident $45; $5-year resident $100; and 5-year non-resident $250.
Anglers also can enjoy $1 off the price of resident, non-resident and senior resident annual licenses purchased anytime throughout the 2015 season. With the discount, the price of a resident annual license is just $20; non-resident annual $50; and senior annual resident $9. A $1.70 processing fee will be added to each transaction.
The PFBC also sells fishing license vouchers, which are similar to gift certificates. The new price reductions also apply to the purchase of vouchers, which can be redeemed at any time during the license year.
Anglers who purchase a license also can buy an optional 2015 fishing license button for just $5. The 2015 color is pink. Buttons serve as a valid display requirement.
Vouchers and licenses can be purchased online through the PFBC’s Outdoor Shop (www.pa.wildlifelicense.com), at more than 900 issuing agents (http://fishandboat.com/flagent.htm), at county treasurers’ offices, and at PFBC regional offices.

PITT-BRADFORD NURSING STUDENTS ACHIEVE 90 PERCENT PASS RATE ON LICENSURE EXAM
Martha Dibble, instructor of nursing at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, right, works with a student during a lab.
|
The Pitt-Bradford pass rate on the National Council Licensure Exam – or NCLEX, as it is commonly referred to – was also seven percentage points higher than the pass rate at other programs in Pennsylvania.
Most programs have seen a decline in scores this year, explained Dr. Tammy Haley, associate professor of nursing and director of the nursing program, because the test is changed every three years. This was the first year for students to take the new test, but Pitt-Bradford students continued to outperform state and national averages.
For the previous three years, Pitt-Bradford students averaged a pass rate of 98 percent compared to a national average of 87 percent.
“We’ve done a good job preparing our students and helping to maintain a high pass rate,” Haley said. “But it is truly the success of the students, who have done the hard work.”
Nursing is one of the most popular majors at Pitt-Bradford, which offers a 2-year ASN leading to the NCLEX and a four-year BSN degree.
Many of Pitt-Bradford’s nursing graduates have stayed in the area to work at health care facilities in the region, according to figures from the Economic and Community Impact Survey conducted by officials from the Center for Social and Urban Research at the University of Pittsburgh. From December 2000 to August 2010, 548 Pitt-Bradford nursing graduates were employed in the six-county region of Cameron, Elk, McKean, Potter and Warren counties in Pennsylvania, and Cattaraugus County, in New York. Additionally, of the total number of nurses employed in the region, 55.6 percent were Pitt-Bradford graduates.

Thomas Encourages Grads to Dream Big at Fall Commencement
Penn State DuBois Instructor in Wildlife Technology Emily Thomas urged graduates to dream big during her commencement address Thursday evening in Hiller Auditorium. |
Thomas offered four points that contained tips for finding success and happiness in her address. They included, "Have Big Dreams", "Believe Anything is Possible", "Create Opportunities", and "Pursue Your Passion".
"Do you remember when you were little and someone asked you what you wanted to be when you grew up and you answered with astronaut, or movie star or professional baseball player?," Thomas asked the graduates. "I encourage you to dig down deep and get back to your childish ways, at least when it comes to dreaming about your future. Take a second to think about what your dream future would look like. What do you wish for when you blow out the candles on your birthday cake? Or when you see a shooting star? I should see a little smirk coming across all of your faces as you think about it. Where would you be working? What would you be doing for a job? Where would you live? Would you be married? What type of person would you marry? Would you have children? Maybe you would rather have dogs. Or guinea pigs. It is your dream. Make it as big as you can. And know that it is possible to attain those dreams."
However, Thomas reminded her audience that achieving those dreams does not come without work and commitment. She said, "You worked so hard, and the degree is finally yours. But you cannot stop there. You need to keep that strong work ethic. Don’t get lazy. Not even for a day. Apply for jobs. Further your education. Create more opportunities. You created a great opportunity for yourself by choosing to further your education at Penn State DuBois. You chose a great institution and please know that we will always be here for you, regardless of where you go in the future. We love when you come back to visit and tell us all of the wonderful things you have accomplished. But you must continue to work hard. Now that you have dreams and believe that anything is possible, you must determine how you are going to get there. You are no longer following a recommended plan of courses. There is no written plan for your future. How are you going to land that dream job? What steps will it take? Know that it will take steps, it will not just happen tomorrow. This is why we focus on teaching you how to think critically and figure out problems. You must create still more opportunities for yourself. You aren’t done yet."
Thomas also related her own story of how she made her dreams come true as a graduate of the very same program in which she now teaches. She was on the other side of the desk as a student in the Penn State DuBois Wildlife Technology Program just over seven years ago.
"I remember writing an email to one of my instructors here at Penn State DuBois when I started my junior year. It was only three months after I was sitting where you are now. I mentioned to her that I intended to get a master’s and that I would finish in 2011, which I hoped would be right before the other two Wildlife teachers retired. I told her that teaching in the Wildlife program would be amazing. I loved the program and the idea of staying at Penn State DuBois for my career," Thomas said. "But I was 20 years old. It was a big dream, one that I knew was a stretch, but I kept it alive over the years. I earned my master’s and stayed in contact with the program. And here I stand now. I am in the middle of my third year teaching in the program, and the instructor I wrote to back then is now a colleague. I could not be happier."
Thomas earned an Associate in Science from the Penn State DuBois Wildlife Technology program in 2007. She then went on to Penn State University Park to earn a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife and Fisheries Science in 2009, and a Master of Science in Wildlife and Fisheries Science in 2011.
Thomas has been an Instructor in Wildlife Technology since August 2012. She oversees a student-run songbird banding station and runs a public Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) bird banding station at the Jamestown Audubon Sanctuary in Jamestown, NY. She also monitors American Kestrel nest boxes in Warren County, PA and Chautauqua County, NY and participates in the monitoring of the Northern Goshawk population in Pennsylvania. Professionally, she is the Vice-President of the Pennsylvania Chapter of The Wildlife Society and serves on the board of the Pennsylvania Society for Ornithology.
Recipients of academic awards for highest distinction were Alexandria Strike of Emporium, PA, for associate degrees, and Christina Lockwood of Reynoldsville, PA, for baccalaureate degrees.
Upon receiving her award, Lockwood said, "This campus has not only changed my life, it has changed me. I am stronger, more confident, and more capable to change the world in ways that I never thought possible. Through kindness and compassion; through wisdom and knowledge; through everyday acts of defiance; through patience and determination; I will carry on with my life forever changed for the better by Penn State DuBois."
