Expanded Cellphone Coverage Plan Moves Forward In Potter County

Expanded Cellphone Coverage Plan Moves Forward

celltower
Verizon Wireless continues to work on expanding its cellphone coverage in Potter County.

Eventually upwards of 90 percent of the county will be covered for mobile phone service.

Potter County Planning Commission approved plans for three more Verizon tower sites at its December meeting. The towers are targeted for one-acre lots in Austin Borough, Wharton Township and Hector Township.

More than two dozen tower sites have been approved so far and several are under construction. Company officials still can’t say when the broadened service will be available. Generally, each site is a 200’ x 200’ plot upon which a lattice tower is built, as well as a small pre-cast concrete equipment shed. Each of the sites is being leased from private landowners.

The towers are upwards of 200 feet tall. Steep terrain is a challenge for construction crews. Access roads have to be built and, at some of the sites, forested areas need to be cleared.

It would be nice if they would do the same for McKean County.

Finally! It's about time.

There's already doing it in McKean County. I can personally count 7 new towers in the past year.

How about putting up JUST CELL Towers and NOT GWEN....What's the matter are they afraid there is NOT enough to control US Rednecks ????

tHE ONLY THING IS THE CELL TOWERS ARE ONLY FOR INTERNET AND THE 4G LTE COVERAGE!!
MOST OF THE PHONES DO not GET 4G LTE
EVEN IF YOUR PHONE GETS 4G IT WILL NOT WORK ON THE NEW TOWERS!!
VERIZON SCREWS THE GENERAL PUBLIC AGAIN!
ALSO THE ONLY REASON THEY ARE DOING THESE TOWERS IS BECAUSE THEY ARE BEING FORCED TO BY LAW FOR THE INTERNET ACCESS THAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE OFFERED AS "AFFORDABLE" HIGH SPEED INTERNET LATEST WORD IS THE AFFORDABLE INTERNET WILL BE ABOUT $100 A MONTH PLUS THE COST OF EQUIPMENT FOR YOUR HOUSE- ABOUT $200 MORE

Affordable Care and Affordable Internet how cool.

2:36 has no idea what he is talking about. If you have a Verizon phone it will work on ANY of their networks. If I didn't know any better, I'd say it's Dan Causer with all the UPPER CASE TYPING. Derrr!

Dear 2:36 your cell phone will work off a tower capable of 4G LTE. it's up to 4G no restricted to. get you internet cheaper if you can OR go t the library where it's free.

Dear 1:56 GWEN? are you serious, your 30 years behind in your conspiracy theory. Their are just going to paint you with a laser and hit ya with a drone now LOL

2:36 really has posted some incorrect information. This information as reported here is correct. Everyone seems to assume that there's something hanus about everything that is reported on here. This is good news, folks. It is unfortunate they will be fragmenting some forests but that is a price of progress. We should thank Verizon for investing in our rural area. Not a big profit margin I'm sure. Happy new year to all!

So theyre eventually going to have voice? Because currently I can only get text and data, especially down around Cross Fork.

Boy I love getting blamed for things I don't do. Only persons with little knowledge of the facts do this. Only the facts as Car 45 --Jack Webb would say. I do know we have a new tower at the head of Barden Brook and my internet ( Verizon ) now is not as good as it used to be. I have more down time on my internet now than I had before. This the real Dan Causer.

Yes voice will also be coming soon. Verizion is just about to make the switch to voice over LTE. As soon as that happens you will have voice as well as internet.

Dan I am? Dam I'm not said...

There are a few correct statements and a LOT of incorrect statements here. These are definitely Verizon 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) which are a different technology than other carriers such as AT&T, Sprint T-Mobile (CDMA not GSM). These towers are strictly DATA towers. NO, NOT internet for your home computer, they are not a Wi-Fi hotspot (darn it). It is the same internet that you have been able to get on any 4G phone outside of the rural areas. You CAN still use VZs "jetpack" for computer usage as before if you don't have high speed internet at home. The way it works I that 4G phones compile voice signals into a data pack for voice transmission instead of the old 3G technology. Thus, ONLY 4G PHONES CAN BE USED ON THESE NEW TOWERS. Unfortunately, those of us with the old "dumb" 3G phones will NOT benefit from these new towers. Your cell phone bill will go up if you get a 4G phone but you can shop plans. You don't have to have unlimited data, so you can keep the cost somewhat reasonable and are able to have better cell service locally. Try some of the off brand carriers like Straight Talk (make sure it will work with VZ towers though. Some phone SIM cards work with VZ, some with AT&T. Definitely check it out to be sure!!) Along with all of that, current AT&T users??? Good Luck.. It is still hit and miss around here. SO.......In a nutshell, ONLY 4G phones will work and they are NOT an internet Wi-Fi hotspot!! I hope this clarifies the 3G 4G old towers, new towers misinformation. Signed....maybe the REAL Dandy Dan...

This cell coverage issue has been a big disappointment. We all pay a monthly fee on cell phone and cable bills and have for years. This was pushed by PA and Potter Co. (Emergency Management) and the justification for enhanced 911 was that if a hunter had a heart attack in the hills of Potter County, they would be able to call for help on their cell phone. One assumed that small towns and villages of permanent residents would not be left out and would receive coverage as well. But years later, lots of fees paid and much money spent, still nothing. It is kind of like the PA Lottery which has taken in $$billions since it began decades and decades ago with "all" profits going to senior citizens. There should have been enough $$ in the Lottery fund to buy every resident over 65 a new home but that that didn't either...

Cell phones still do not work on our end of barden brook .Thank God for our car phone to use in case of needs as they arise which cost a pretty penny each year. $388.00 a year.. this is for the on star phone only not the minutes. So the towers are a waste of monies ,only to keep track of you. Enough said, Fred's dead.

12:06am--

Read the fine print on the PA Lottery. After all the costs for the program, such as ads, printing the tickets, ass-tronomical salaries of the lottery board, etc., then what's left over (very little) goes to seniors. However, when that segment of government receives the lottery payout, guess what ... they take their cut and expenses out before helping those seniors in need.

Does anyone know when the tower in Whited Road is going to be live? Can't seem to get an answer from anywhere.

I wish AT&T would expand in McKein County...

Wow. I cannot believe the amount of misinformation that is being posted. Yes the new towers Verizon puts up are only 4g and not backwards compatible. It is a technology company and since technology is always evolving, why would any company in its right mind spend all that money to put up old technology that will be outdated and turned off before you know it. Yes you have to have a 4g phone to be able to use these towers. Yes voice, text and data work on these new towers. The new towers have no affect on the Verizon DLS internet. 2 totally different things. Just because towers are going up doesn't mean your DSL is going to work better or worse. Again, its 2 different things.

Why can't everyone just be happy that Verizon is bringing cell coverage to areas that don't currently have it? There will still be areas that do not get service due to the hills around here and the cost it would be to put up an additional tower to only cover a couple hundred people. That just doesn't fit into the profit model.

So these new towers will eliminate the need to have a network extender for cell phone service?
