The Friends of Lyman Run and Lyman Run State Park will be hosting ICE-O-RAMA at Lyman Run State Park on Saturday, January 31 from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. A fun filled day of family oriented winter activities is planned including a look at the huge fin of the Giant Ice Shark of Lyman Lake (Lymanensis carnivorus). This legendary creature was thought to be extinct but evidence of its existence was discovered while the new Lyman Lake dam was being reconstructed. Want to know more about it? Then plan to attend this winterfest to learn where it came from and whether or not it still swims under the ice of the lake! Under water cameras will be looking for any evidence of the shark and anyone with a smartphone who downloads the FISH PHONE APP. from Vexilar (also available on itunes and Google Play) will be able to tune into the camera and take photos of what might show up. This app must be downloaded prior to coming to the park as there is no Wi-Fi available there. But the Bluetooth capability of your smartphone will allow you to “tune” into the camera’s live-streaming images.

Free tickets to this event have been passed out all month and will also be available at the State Park’s information trailer that will be parked at the dam spillway. Event Schedule and maps will also be available. At each venue participating kids can have their tickets punched and when full, can take them to the trailer for a free prize of an actual shark tooth (while supplies last). Activities for the day include: Downhill sledding (bring your own sled or saucer to zoom down this awesome hill!), clinics at various times of the day to teach cross country skiing (have skis? bring them along and get some “pointers” – some skis will be available), learn how to snowshoe (equipment provided), snowmobile rides through the Daggett campground provided by the God’s Country Black Forest Snowmobile Club, Family Ice fishing clinics (equipment provided) and of course, the Giant Ice Shark fin…do you dare to touch it?

The Friends of Lyman Run, a chapter of the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation, will be selling refreshments. Hot coffee and hot chocolate ($1.00 ) and several varieties of soup ($2.00) will be available at the park pavilion. Put on your long johns, scarves, hats and mittens…and come out and play in the snow with us!

Lyman Run State Park is located at 454 Lyman Run Road, Galeton, PA. or (814) 435-5010. Friends of Lyman Run…LIKE us on Facebook!
