January Newsletter: Pennsylvania Lumber Heritage Region

The Lumber Heritage Region will be co-sponsoring Bill Jamerson's Civilian Conservation Corps program at ten locations through out the LHR region in May. Bill's program is an hour of light hearted and musical stories of a day in the life of a "CCC Boy." They are looking for about 4 more venues to host the program - libraries, historical societies, schools, etc. If you have such a location that you think might be good for a program like this....please contact Mike or Steve at 814-486-0213.

Lost Art:
Mural Building in Mount Jewett

The Mount Jewett Heritage Mural was a 46 foot high by 80 foot long acrylic painting on a brick wall. The building's mural was painted by Chinese artist Kong Ho. It was commissioned by the McKean County Arts Council, McKean County Industrial Development Council, and Lumber Heritage Region of Pennsylvania. The building was weak and had begun to implode on it's own. Demolition began on the "mural" side of the dilapidated building at Main and Center streets in Mt. Jewett and is now a vacant lot.  Kong Ho, a former faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, designed the huge mural that was completed in 2004. The building has been in deplorable condition for some time and began to collapse. The Bradford-based Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau has had professional photographs taken of the mural. The images could be reproduced on panels to be erected at another site in Mt. Jewett. The building has been remove. We are lucky that the ANFVB had professional photos taken of the mural before it went down.
