McKean 4-H'ers Teach Visitors To 2015 Farm Show About Water In Foods We Eat

Pam McFall (in the lab coat), leader of the McKean Adventurers 4-H Club, along with Larry McFall, Stephanie McFall, and John Cradduck, helped the 4-H Science program by teaching visitors to the 2015 Farm Show in Harrisburg about water in the foods we eat.

Participants were asked to rank food items based on their volume of water. Many were surprised to find that a cucumber is 98% water and a loaf of bread is 50% water, while even dry wheat cereal is 15% water. Youth and adults came to appreciate the value of water, not only as a drink, but as a component of food.

The Farm Show continues through Saturday. Visitors are encouraged to stop by the 4-H Science booth as well as the room full of 4-H Opportunities.

McKean 4-H Clubs are part of Penn State Extension’s youth development programming. Traditional clubs are open to youth aged 5-19. Screened adult volunteers are also needed to contribute their experience, talent, and time through club participation and leadership.
