No More Leftovers For Senior Citizens

New regulations from state, feds to impact seniors

COUDERSPORT — New regulations passed down from the state and federal governments will affect local programs benefitting seniors.

The changes were discussed at a recent meeting of the Aging Advisory Committee, and include new mandates to comply with the Older Americans Act passed by the federal government.

The state is now requiring certain changes to bring the programs in line with federal mandates in order to ensure funding to local senior centers and other entities continues.

One of the biggest impacts will be on meals served at local senior centers. New caloric requirements will limit the types and amounts of food that can be given to seniors on a daily basis, and no longer will seniors be able to take uneaten portions of their meals home for later consumption, unless it is fruit or pre-packaged portions of the meal, according to Commissioner Susan Kefover.  Read more...

I certailny hope some valid rationale emerges for why folks cannot take uneaten food home. What, pray tell,do they plan to do with the uneaten food? Is the govt hatching a plan to fatten a litter of pigs for an occasional economical entree? Or is it that somehow serving sizes have gotten larger to actually make leftovers to help the elders with meals for later. This, of course, would be deemed wasteful. I am sure more info will be forthcoming. Hate to see anymore cuts, things are already to the bone.

Yes keep believing republicans when they tell you they care about the middle and lower classes. Who's in charge of the house and senate in PA again?

Telling people what they can an can not take home for leftovers makes me wonder are we becoming the next Communist state!!!!

yeah, communism is all about meals on wheels and leftovers. give me a break.

For all you republican haters this mandate comes from Mrs. obummas healthy eating incentives that were forced on the schools . So nice try blaming the republican house and congress !

Fear of law suits. If an elder takes home un eaten food and later eats it and gets sick or dies, the elder of the family can sue.

Republicans??? You people can't even blame who is really responsible for these half witted regulations. The republicans just took over the senate this week. Only a bill like this would have been sent to Obama by "Reid>

divide and conquer sure proves it by this blog that it works. This uneaten food thing has been going on for years. My elderly neighbor who has passed well over 10 years now wanted to bring her leftovers home to feed her dog so as not to waste she was not allowed.

I agree with #1 commentor.. Hate to see them throw it all away. My father-in-law and a lot of his friends live on this leftover food for days and since they are all living on Social Security only anyway--it sure does help out alot.

Can't say enough good about the Office of the Aging in Coudersport. What a wonderful program and gives a great social interaction to all of our seniors.

I dom't mind that they have to sign a age waiver but hopefully they don't limit it to certain income levels eventually. Because we know that it will be so low that most seniors who have worked so hard their whole lives can't even qualify.

signing an age waiver. that's one way to get a woman to fess up to her real age. lol

If the government is sponsoring the program why shouldn't they have a say in the service they provide. It shouldn't be up to the government to feed people.

The Aging Waiver is not a document to sign. It's a program and its based on the income. Low income qualify. They want people to spend their own money and resources down by paying out for their own care and services or family to take care of their own before help from dept of aging. Low low income elders have nothing to fret about with this. It's the lower middle to middle class that do--once again.

The only way to change the government is to get every last one of them crooks outa office and put people in office that have lived on minimum wage for the past 20 years the people that this stupid shit effects and let them run the country for four years hell at this point ya might as well put a preschool student in for president can't hurt this country anymore than it all ready is.... Uncle Si for president 2016!!

Very poor policy said...

why? why? why? for goodness sake WHY would some power hungry bureaucrat think it be better for a senior center to throw out food!? than to let people have leftovers and not possibly be hungry later on that evening!!? Some elderly don't eat large meals, they eat smaller portions over the course of a day. Why would officials want food wasted and hunger? Instead it appears they prefer perfectly good leftover food in a garbage can. This is a VERY POOR policy. Very poor. Heartless and despicable. From the current WH Admin I'm not surprised but I really would have expected far better from Mr. Duke. So disappointing to know that it seems policy is more important than human beings.
