March 15-21 is Pennsylvania 4-H Week

March 15-21 is Pennsylvania 4-H Week to celebrate members and adult volunteers engaged in positive youth development throughout the state.

Look for 4-H displays in windows of businesses around McKean County. 4-H is the largest youth development organization in the world, a community of 7 million young people in more than 50 countries who are learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills through projects of their choice; it is a premier youth program for boys and girls, ages 5-19, who participate as members of clubs and special interest groups.

4-H provides the opportunity to make new friends, visit new places, attend workshops and conferences, host meetings, and help the community. 4-H is where young people explore, learn and discover in a safe environment. In 4-H, youth find their true passions, gain confidence and give back to their community. Help us celebrate PA 4-H Week as 4-H youth step up and take responsibility for their futures – and ours.

Pennsylvania 4-H is a part of Penn State Cooperative Extension located at the Penn State University campus in State College. With this connection, the 4-H organization is able to take research-based information from the state’s land grant university and share it with youth in urban, small town, and rural communities. Along with the 4-H philosophy of “Learning by Doing”, 4-H uses the four-leaf clover as its organizational emblem. The four H’s on the leaves of the clover stand for Head, Heart, Hands and Health. 4-H members develop life skills through hands-on projects that range from citizenship to expressive arts, communication to foods and nutrition, and leadership to science and technology.

Currently in McKean County, most of the clubs focus on livestock/dairy, horse, small animals/pets, shooting sports, the outdoors, and/or robotics. There is also an online teen leadership club. Other projects are chosen according to the interest of the members. Upcoming activities include the Regional Shooting Sports event in St Marys on March 21, a livestock countywide meeting in Smethport on March 29, Capital Days in Harrisburg April 18-20, the Wildlife and Forestry Field Day in Rock Springs on April 25, and Northwinds 4-H Camp at Denton Hill State Park in June.

New members are encouraged to join the program, but adult volunteers are greatly needed to expand the outreach throughout the county. Contact the McKean County Extension Office at 814-887-5613 for more information or if you would like to schedule the Extension Educator for youth programming.

Penn State Extension encourages persons with disabilities to participate in its programs and activities. If you anticipate needing any type of accommodation or have questions about the physical access provided, please contact the McKean County Extension Office in advance of your participation. Penn State is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer, and is committed to providing employment opportunities to minorities, women, veterans, individuals with disabilities, and other protected groups.
