TU banquet registration deadline is March 20

The Trout Unlimited Tiadaghton Chapter #688’s annual banquet will be Saturday, March 28 at the Penn Wells Hotel in Wellsboro. The buffet dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m.

The deadline for registration and payment by members and the public is Friday, March 20. Tickets will not be sold at the door.

At the banquet, keynote speaker Dennis Charney will talk about “Centre Limestone.” He will introduce those attending to the premier limestone streams in Centre County and talk about why each stream is unique.

Charney noted, “When water is pressed through limestone, a porous rock, it creates underground springs of cold, high quality water. The springs in turn create cold-water streams that are good for bugs. “Trout love cold water and feed on bugs,” he added.

“I’ve been fly-fishing for 25 years.” His grandfather introduced him to trout and bass fishing 35 years ago when he was a youngster.

Charney is a Federation of Fly Fishers certified casting instructor and registered guide who gives personalized instruction on Pennsylvania’s limestone streams. He is a staff instructor for the Wulff School of Fly Fishing in the Catskills in New York and employed by Flyfisher’s Paradise in State College.

“Blast and Cast” raffle winners’ names will be drawn at the banquet for four prizes: a Savage Axis rifle or $300 cash, Orvis Clearwater Fly Rod outfit, Marlin XT-22 rifle or $150 cash, and a Cabela’s chest or waist pack. Tickets are $5 each or five for $20. Ticket holders need not be present to win.

The Deck of Cards raffle prize is a Pennsylvania Trout Unlimited custom-built 9-foot, 5-weight, 3-piece fly rod with tube.

Other banquet raffle prizes are: $25, $50 and $70 gift certificates; Angler 8.5-foot, 5-weight fly rod outfits, net, nippers lumbar pack, a hand carved duck decoy, custom wood key ring, an original painting, an Avian-X turkey decoy set, wine gift basket and Cabela’s chest/waist pack.

Banquet tickets are $32 for adults and $5 for children. Reservations must be made by March 20. For reservations and Blast and Cast tickets call 570-724-1801 ext. 113 or email

Proceeds from the banquet will benefit chapter activities, such as stream habitat enhancements, environmental programs and youth fishing.
