Committee Meets With Acting Secretary of Agriculture

Earlier this week, the House Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee, which I chair, held an informational meeting with the acting secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Russell Redding. Mr. Redding has a long history of public service in Pennsylvania agriculture and most recently served as the dean of the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at Delaware Valley College.

We covered a wide variety of issues during the meeting. I encouraged the secretary to focus on restoring funding to programs Gov. Tom Wolf has proposed to eliminate in his budget, including the Hardwoods Development Council, which is so important to our region. I also relayed concerns I hear from local farmers about the impact of environmental regulations on their small family operations and urged him to get the department involved in helping these farmers.

Other issues discussed during the meeting included the PA Preferred program, food safety inspection processes, horse racing, county fairs and more.

I was honored to sponsor a resolution recognizing Tuesday, March 31, as Pennsylvania Farm Bureau Day and to have the opportunity to present the resolution at a gathering of hundreds of farmers from across the state, including more than a half dozen from McKean and Potter counties.
