The Friends of Lyman Run and Lyman Run State Park will be holding their annual Kids Fishing Derby on Saturday, May 16th from 9:30 to 1:30…rain or shine!

This year the age limit has been changed to 14 yrs. old and under.

Registration begins at 9:30. A free lunch will be provided for all registered contestants and lunch for others is also available with a free will donation.

Prizes will be awarded for the longest fish overall in any age category. Part of the big prize will be a free taxidermy mount of the winning fish by Rick Hartley who owns Endless Mountain Taxidermy on Main Street in Galeton.

Other prizes will be for the first kid to reach their limit of 5 trout, then after the longest overall fish will be prizes for longest fish in ages 4 – 7, then longest fish for ages 8 – 10, then longest fish for ages 11 – 12, and finally longest fish for ages 13 – 14…all category are for boys or girls.

A reminder that families should bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on, fishing gear and bait. Also insect repellant in case of buggies being out, but there will also some available at the registration trailer. The derby fishing area will be from the spillway pool below the dam to the old ford downstream where a fence will be placed to keep the stocked fish in the area. This area will be children under 14 yrs. of age fishing only (no general fishing) from 8:00 am on Friday morning of the 15th to 6:00 am on Monday morning the 18th of May.

To repeat, the derby area will only be open to children fishing for that entire weekend, even beyond the derby time. Any others caught fishing there will be fined – this is to continue to allow kids the opportunity to fish for those fish that have been specifically stocked for children’s fishing.

Adults do not have to have a fishing license for this event but their actions will be restricted during the derby…they may assist their children up to a certain point as permitted by the PFBC regulations. Violation will disqualify any fish entered into the derby.

The Friends of Lyman Run, which is a chapter or the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation, would like to thank all of the Friends volunteers who are helping out with this event, park staff and all of the businesses and individuals who donated to the derby prizes…

Lael Eggler at Gaines Lures, Don Kelly at The Tackle Shack, Tony Cimino at Cimino Hardware, John and Barb Andrews at Carter Camp Lodge, Rick Hartley at Endless Mountain Taxidermy, Brad and Deb Keener at Keener’s Kountry Store, Tia and Tammy and the crew at Foxes Pizza, Jackie and the crew at Acorn Market and Pudgies Pizza, and Renee and the crew at Nittany Minit Mart.
