DEANE CENTER CONCERT WITH JOE CALLAHAN'S NEW BAND

Joe Callahan’s new band includes: (from left to right) Josh Warren, Callahan, Dan Folkers and Brandon Lusk.

WELLSBORO, PA — Winny, a new band composed of well-known performers from Tioga County, will play a mixture of original folk-rock and pop music written by Joe Callahan, the group’s founder. The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4 in the Gallery at the Warehouse Theatre on Central Avenue in Wellsboro.

Callahan has been writing songs since he was 17. His music reflects his inspirations, including Wilco, My Morning Jacket and Dawes –alternative rock, rock and folk-rock bands respectively. A 2008 Antioch University, Los Angeles graduate with a masters in creative writing, he is skillful in writing lyrics. This singer-songwriter has been performing on a regular basis since the April 2011 release of his debut EP “Reprise.”

“This summer, I decided to form a band because I have found it easier to build a following for my music with a band. Solo artists are represented as ‘acoustic’ or given some kind of label that means stripped-down or basic. I never wanted that; I want my music to be dense like the Beatles. The band’s name came from a nonsense logo I used to draw on my book covers in middle school,” said Callahan.

Members of Winny include Callahan on guitar and lead vocals, Josh Warren on drums, Dan Folkers on bass and Brandon Lusk on rhythm guitar and backup vocals. “Brandon will not be playing with us Sept. 4. He has another commitment,” said Callahan.

Folkers and Warren live in Lawrenceville and Callahan and Lusk in Wellsboro. They rehearse in a garage in Lawrenceville. During the past five years, the members of the band have performed together in various configurations at venues across Tioga County.

Also on stage will be guest artist Gabe Stillman. A Williamsport native, he is a blues singer and guitarist. His musical influences include the blues, soul, funk, R&B and rock and roll. A December 2014 graduate of the Berklee School of Music in Boston with a bachelor's in professional music, Stillman performs songs by Ray Charles, Howlin' Wolf, Buddy Guy, Tab Benoit and James Brown among others.

Audience members will be seated at tables cabaret-style and are welcome to bring their own snacks and beverages.

Admission at the door is $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and students. Children 12 and under accompanied by a parent are admitted free. For more information or to make reservations, call the Deane Center at 570-724-6220.
