Let's Go Fly a Kite Day at Lyman Run

The wind would come and go, but when it was there, the kites were up in the air and flying high! About 65 people participated in the Let's Fly A Kite Day sponsored by the Friends of Lyman Run today at Lyman Run dam. Kites were donated to the event by Galeton Drug with the Friends group thanks and quite a few kids brought their own kites to fly. Some of the great big demonstration kites needed more wind to get aloft, but eventually, the giant biplane and hydrofoil sailed above the dam. Thanks also to event organizer Paul and Sue Miller and to members Maxine Harrison, Beth Lounsbury and to John and Leslie Kelly for volunteering their time.

A reminder that there is a Friends of Lyman Run membership meeting on Monday, August 24th at 6:30 pm at the park maintenance building. Progress on the Stars in the Arts event will be discussed. So far over 25 vendors have signed up (there is still time to send in an application) and the Friends group is now looking for some business participation to help fund this event.

Stars in the Arts will be held from 10 - 6 on Saturday, September 12 to coincide with the Public Viewing Night at Cherry Springs during the Black Forest Star Party. Donations are needed to help pay for musical entertainment ($600 is needed), 2 banner flags ($300) , a Table cover ($160) and Stars in the Arts souvenirs ( $500). All of the participating artisans are either PA Wilds, Rt. 6 or any other artisan trail artists. They will have items on display as well as for sale.

Over 600 astronomers will be participating in the Black Forest Star Party at Cherry Springs that weekend and they are also invited to visit Lyman Run and see the arts and crafts. After the event at Lyman Run, the public is invited to visit at Cherry Springs from 7 - 11 pm where 30 - 40 astronomers will be volunteering their telescopes for the public to look through.

Food vendors will also be at Lyman Run as well as area musicians including a concert by well know folk musician Van Wagner, but we need help to pay for the these items. If any business is interested in helping out, please contact Maxine Harrison at 814-435-2518. The Friends of Lyman Run is a chapter of the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation and is a 501 (c) 3 charity. Donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.

Stars in the Arts vendor applications are available at the PAWilds artisan center in Coudersport, the Rt. 6 Tourism office in Galeton or for pick up at the Lyman Run State Park office. This will be the first year of the event but it is hoped that it will become an annual event every fall at Lyman Run.
