Six area students will each receive $10,000 in scholarship aid from the John J. Murphy Family Scholarship Fund at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.
2015 John J. Murphy Family Scholarship recipients include:

    Monica Moses
Megan Shumway of Olean High School, pursuing nursing at Gannon University.
Named in honor of the late John J. “Jack” Murphy, Olean native and former CEO and Chairman of Dresser Industries, this scholarship was established initially through a grant from the Communities Foundation of Texas.

“This scholarship has now been awarded to 44 students with grants totaling $290,000 since it was established at the Foundation in 2008,” said Karen Niemic Buchheit, Community Foundation executive director.

“Mr. Murphy was extremely generous in his efforts to help our area’s best and brightest students to continue their educations,” she added. “We are glad to administer this scholarship, carrying on his legacy.”

Each year the John J. Murphy Family Scholarship is awarded to six graduating high school seniors from the greater Olean area, according to Ms. Buchheit.

Preferred candidates are students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing, engineering or business.
Selection criteria includes scholastic achievement, school and community participation, demonstrated leadership potential and financial need. Consideration is also given to a student whose family members are employed by or have retired from Dresser-Rand in Olean, Ms. Buchheit noted.
