O.R. Phase I Complete at Cole Memorial

In August 2014, Cole Memorial broke ground on a 4,533-square foot addition and renovation project for the surgical services department located on the hospital’s second floor. As scheduled, phase one was completed September 15 for two new operating rooms (O.R.), a larger six-bed post-anesthesia care unit (P.A.C.U.), a new preoperative patient holding area, storage and private family consult rooms. A new boiler plant and air cooling tower for the facility were added earlier this year.

“The surgical suite upgrades represent another way that Cole Memorial is committed to providing excellent care for our patients and the community,” said Cole Memorial’s Director of Surgical Services Karen McClelland. “The new efficient layout and additional space will improve patient satisfaction and privacy, as well as create a positive work environment for staff.”

Christan Caramia, MD, medical director of Invasive Services at Cole Memorial said, “The overall renovation project will make a difference for surgeons, staff and patients when done. Besides the emotional boost of practicing in a new, state-of-the-art environment, much effort was placed on the work-flow and patient flow, resulting in a more functional, efficient and spacious O.R. area. We now have three bigger operating rooms to allow for larger cases and the expansion of surgical services in the future. All this translates to better patient care.”

Phase two of the project includes renovation of the past O.R. suites including the endoscopy unit, interventional pain service area and the installation of new equipment. According to Karen McClelland, no interruptions in surgical care will occur and the entire project is expected to be done in February 2016.

“Among the best reasons for choosing Cole Memorial’s surgical department, is the recognition that, to complement our beautiful facility, we continue to build a culture that cares (about patients and the people we work with) and that team-based care matters,” added Dr. Caramia. “This balance will allow us to continue to deliver excellent patient care and be a rural health care success story for years to come.”
