Letter to the Editor/opinion

Webster’s defines hypocrisy as “the behavior of people who do things that they tell other people not to do.”

In a recent statement, Congressman Glenn “GT” Thompson (R-PA-5) scolded Governor Tom Wolf for being in Washington to “raise campaign funds while our Commonwealth’s budget impasse now stands at 112 days.” As it turns out, Governor Wolf was in DC for a meeting with the PA delegation about rail safety (including Sens. Toomey and Casey), but GT’s outrage is an interesting sentiment from one of the members of Congress who was directly responsible for shutting down the government in 2013; a shutdown that furloughed over 800,000 federal employees and brought social security and veterans disability payments and benefits to a screeching halt.

GT called the Governor’s politics “near-sighted.” Near-sighted is the only way you could explain GT’s doing exactly the same thing for which he is criticizing Governor Wolf, and hoping no one will call him on it. While he was voting to shut down the government in 2013, GT continued fundraising for his reelection. He raised $9,554 between October 1st and October 16th; $5,000 of which was raised in one day. Can we say Fundraiser? While seniors were worrying whether they were going to receive their Social Security checks, 800,000 federal employees were furloughed and hundreds of social service agencies were working without the promise of payment, GT kept on fundraising.

After debating him nine times and listening to his defense of a dysfunctional Washington while running for the Congressional seat in 2014, GT’s hypocrisy is no surprise to me. His personally sharing with me that he thought the shutdown was a joke is what moved me to run in the first place. Statements like this demonstrate his lack of respect for his constituents. That he finished his scolding rant with an offer to “be in the room” to help Governor Wolf “further the process and assist with negotiations” would be laughable if it weren’t so insulting. Thanks GT, but… No thanks.

What's the matter? Can't you extremist ultra conservative Republicans handle the truth? Funny how that works.....

Why do Progressives like Ms Taylor always neglect to mention that the entire sequestration idea came directly from Obama? I guess it's just easier to blame someone else than take responsibility for their own parties actions.

I am always amazed at how the Republicans never use their brains. Ted Cruz was the force behind the government shutdown, which the GOP supported. Yet, as soon as the damage was clear, Teddy boy started referring to it as the "Obama Shutdown." And since the Republicans in this country follow blindly as though they have no brains of their own, of course it suddenly became the Obama Shutdown. Amazing.. Glenn Thompson is worthless. He always has been and always will be. But he will get re-elected at every election because we have more Republicans than Democrats around here and the Republicans are ALWAYS determined to vote against their own best interest. I will never understand that.

Sorry Anonymous @5:57:00 AM but your attempts to blame it on Senator Cruz are severely misguided. Obama had the sequestration idea as an attempt to blackmail Republicans to give him everything that he wanted with no concessions on Obama and Democrats part. After using Federal funds to keep WW2 veterans from visiting their own monument, and keep visitors out of Federal parks, and seeing a very negative public reaction, Obama then tried to place the blame on Republicans. Apparently he didn't do a very good jobs of it because they(Republicans) took control of the Senate in the following election. I fail to see how having 94 million people who are no longer a part of the workforce, record numbers of people receiving food stamps/welfare, and a record $10 trillion added to the National Debt (more than all other President combined) as being in ANYONES "best interests".

Politics! Trash one - then trash another! I find this article full of loop-holes and aimed solely at trying to discredit. Some people just get a thrill of trashing others.
