Thompson Announces Grant for Allegheny National Forest Bike Trail Project

Washington, DC – Congressman Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (PA-05) announced the awarding of an Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) grant, in the amount of $100,000, to the Warren County Development Association. The funding, which will be combined with $107,000 from the state and $103,000 in local money, will be used to construct the first phase of Trails at Jakes Rocks, a mountain bike trail system.

“This trail system is expected to bring around 5,000 people into Warren County each year and generate more than $800,000 annually,” Thompson said. “Our region has a great natural resource in the Allegheny National Forest and it is great to see it utilized to increase local tourism.”

The Allegheny National Forest (ANF) occupies 35 percent of the land mass in Warren County. It currently attracts hikers, campers, hunters, boaters and ATV/snowmobile operators, but no mountain bike trails currently exist in the ANF. The Jakes Rocks system will eventually stretch over more than 40 miles of terrain.

“This award is proof that working collaboratively across bureaucratic lines does work effectively in completing worthy projects,” said James Decker, president and CEO of the Warren County Chamber of Business and Industry. “We look forward to continued collaboration with ARC and the U.S. Forest Service in completing the entire 46 miles of trails included in the overall project design. We are confident that this project will serve as a catalyst for significant increase in tourism traffic to the Allegheny Forest Region."
